WELLESLEY CLUB ROBBERY
AN ARREST MADE VALUABLES MAY BE RECOVERED Smart work on the part of Detectives Murray, Cooper and Hunt resulted in an arrest being made in the city yesterday afternoon in connection with the recent robbery of cups and trophies from the Wellesley Club. Although the valuables are not yet in the possession of the police, it is thought that they will soon be recovered and restored to their rightful owners. , The detectives had taken up a position in Manners Street, near Cuba Street, about 3 p.m., and were keeping close watch on the passing crowds, when they observed a man to whom suspicion attached approaching. Hewas quickly apprehended and taken into custody, where charges of breaking and entering and theft from the Wellesley Club were preferred egainst him. He will appear before the Magistrate’s Court this morning. During the early hours of December 23 the Wellesley Club was broken into and five silver cups and three silver vases were stolen, the total value being £7O. There was no evidence at the time as to how the place had been entered, but the police formed the opinion that the offender or offenders had been secreted in the building during the day and had waited until all the members had left for home. Then, of course, the task of removing the cups was comparatively easy. Several rewards have been offered since the robbery occurred for the return of the property, but no direct step was taken until the police effected an arrest yesterday afternoon.
