FOREIGN CONTROL OF RUBBER
UNITED STATES INQUIRY
ATTENTION TO MONOPOLIES AT HOME ADVISED
(Rec. January 8, 9.15 p.m.) Washington, January 7.
While a House of Representatives Committee was investigating the foreign control of rubber, the activities of the Secretary for Commerce (Air. H. Hoover) were assailed on the floor of the House by Mr. Black (Democrat, New York), as “Propaganda for rubber interests here.” Mr. Black asserted that the price of crude rubber had little to do with the increase in tire prices except to furnish “an excuse to our extortionists.”
Mr. Connally (Texas) asserted that the committee should turn its attention to monopolies in their own country over which Congress had legislative powers. He advised the committee to take a look at the “trusts that are running between its legs,” and not spend all its time attacking foreign monopolies. Air Celler (Democrat, New York) asserted that “Mr. Hoover has ranted and railed against the British and yet has encouraged monopolies in this country.”—Reuter.
