RECEIVES LAST SACRAMENT.Rome, January 6. His Eminence Cardinal Gasquet is seriously ill, and has received the Last Sacrament.—-Sydney “Sun” Cable. [His Eminence Cardinal Francis Aidan Gasquet is one of. the few Englighmen who have attained the honour of the Red Hat in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in London in 1846, being the third son of Dr. Gasquet, and was educated at Downside College, Bath He entered the Church through the Benedictine Order, of which he later became Superior. He is best known in England as a great historical writer, having a long list, of publications to his credit, most of which deal with the Catholic Church in the davs of the Reformation In 1888 he published “Henrv VIII and the English Monasteries,” and in 1890 he issued "Edward VI and the Book of Common Praver.” These publications were followed bv a large number of other works, the chief of which were “The Great Pestilence,” “The Last Abbot of Glastonbury,” "The Eve of the. Reformation ” '"English Monastic Life.” and a life of “His Holiness Pope Pius XI.” Cardinal Gasquet, who is Doctor of Laws, was created a Cardinal in 1914, and since then has resided at the Palazzo di St. Calisto in Rome.]
