A Balclutha angler who was fishing near the mouth of the Koan branch of the Molyneux last week had an exciting experience with a large fish which he hooked on a spinning minnow (states the "Otago Daily Times”) Immediately he "struck” the fish the angler knew that- he had hooked. a large one. It made out into the stream pulling fiard, until the I?st inch of the angler’s 40 yards of line was out. The angler fried to keep nace and run the fish down stream in the orthodox style, but could not do so. There was a final rush on the part of the fish, and the trace parted at the point where it was attached to the line. It was a new trace, but the angler is convinced that only stout wire could have held the fish. He caught a glimpse of the fish in the early mart of the rtruggle, and states that it was at least three feet long and weighed anything from 151 b. upwards. Other anglers on hearing the circumstances are inclined to think that it was not a trout, but a quinnat salmon, which are on the move just now in the Waitaki and in Canterbury rivers. Quinnat are known to be in the Molyneux, although there is no record of any having been landed with hook and line. ' The same angler had the luck to bag a six and four-pounder trout that day, but these hardly compensated for the' loss of the leviathan. A far-sighted policy has been adopted bv the Birkenhead (Auckland) Borough Council with a view to minimising accidents from increasing motor traffic (states the Auckland "Herald”). This is in the direction of rounding.off difficult street corners. So far this endeavour has been successful in respect to two corners, and it is intended to approach owners of properties in respect to several other corners.
