QUEER BEHAVIOUR

SENSATION AT NEW BRIGHTON YOUNG MAN’S ANTICS ON ROOF By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, January 7. A sensation was caused at New Brighton shortly after 1 o’clock this afternoon by the extraordinary behaviour of a young man. Clad only in a pair of shorts, he clambered on to the tiled roof of the pier buildings. He ran all over the roof, then sat down and started to throw tiles on to the roadway below. He also pulled down some electric wires. A crowd of over 1000 people watched his antics. A posse of police was hurried to New Brighton in a police van. The young man knew a couple of the policemen and submitted quietly to being escorted back to Christchurch. It is estimated that he did £7O or £BO worth of damage at New Brighton. He was removed to a mental hospital. The young . man is well known in sporting circles in Christchurch. His nervous breakdown is believed to have been caused by too much deep study after working hours, combined with strenuous endeavour on the fields of sport over a considerable period.
