THE RACING WORLD

REEFTON MEETING WEIGHTS FOR TRENTHAM SUMMER MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "The Watcher.”) Nominations for the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club will close to-night at 5 o’clock. The_ telegraph office" at Pahiatua closes at 5 p.tn. Lava was incorrectly telegraphed as an acceptor in the Shorts Handicap on the second day of the. Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Owner-trainer J. M. Cameron, who came over from Sydney, and spent the holidays with his family in Hawke’s Bay, intends to return by the Marama to-day. Shirley’s form at Awapuni and Hastings entitles her to consideration in discussing possibilities in future sprinting events. Merry Day does not appear amongst the Wellington nominations. Reports from the Wairarapa state that she is to be given a spell No Response, who was backed and failed at Feilding, made amends at Stratford by winning a double. He may not be’ raced for a few weeks, but when again before the public should be equal to a good class hack event. The well-bred Royal Mint was raced nt the Taranaki and Stratford meetings during the holidays, but after having every chance the best he could do was an indifferent third to the moderate Fire Brigade, with Glenganfi second, conceding 331 b. in weight. Although Bevis was twice as well backed on the second day at Stratford as he was on the opening day, he got no nearer the stake money. Although noted for being a smart beginner, Bevis did not jump out well from the baitier in any of his engagements at Stratford, and not being a stayer, his chances were not improved by his slow beginning. . . H Hickey produced a promising mare in Epistle at Stratford, winuing a double. Epistle is a four-year-old half sister by Polydamon to Correspondent, who was a useful performer in Hickey’s colours a few seasons ago. She had two unplaced performances last season, so that in showing such good form in practically her maiden efforts, she promises to be quite as useful as her relative. Auckland reports state that Tall limber and Hyde Park will be racing at the Foxton meeting this month. Amongst the winners at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting was the three-year-old gelding Plying Shot. He is bv Campfire—Anserine. Anserine is by Formby out of Gosling, and is therefore a half-sister to the Auckland Cup winner Depredation, and as Depredation was by Campfire it will be seen that Flying Shot is a three-quarter brother in blood to him. Flying Shot won his race in a resolute manner, and as lie has size he looks the sort to prove a good stake earner in the future. Prior to the Taranaki meeting Merle was doing good work on the Hawera track, but she let her supporters down badly. Taken back to Hawera she repeated her track form, and was sent to Stratford, being again backed with confidence by her connections. But for the fact that she was ridden by an experienced rider in A. McCormac, it is possible Royal Damon would have beaten her for second place, the race being won by Toapaiti. Evidently Merle is not so good in public at present as her connections think, but as she is only three jyears old, there is plenty of time for her to show improvement.

As an indication of the big crowd that attended the Stratford Racing Club’s meeting on New Year’s Day, the gate takings amounted to something like £1360. About £lOOO was taken on the second day, and only the bad weather experienced on the first day prevented one of the most successful meetings in the history of the club. Baldowa is said to have been responsible for a very attractive performance when he won the concluding event at the Invercargill meeting on Monday, as he met sqrious interference. He appears to be quite sound again, and if lie continues to go on the right way he may win in much better company before the end of the season. Rosedav’s breakdown at the Southland meeting was only a recurrence of the trouble which has afflicted him for some time past, and it is understood that arrangements have been made to have him worked on the beach at Riverton. Mr. A. G. Hill’s consistent little mare Mantua raav also be sent to Riverton, to be trained bv J. Hymers for tlie Dunedin Cup. On the opening day at Stratford the girth on Gaillard slipped back, and in a close finish for the Douglas Handicap lie suffered defeat bv a nose.

In response to a communication from tlie New Zealand Racing Conference, an inspection of the Takapuna racecourse was made last week by the Auckland District Committee, and a letter bearing on the matter was forwarded to the president of the conference, Sir George Clifford. The tenor of the District Committee’s letter has not transpired, but it was stated on Saturday that the matter has been referred back by the president to the District Committee for further consideration, and a special meeting of that body has been convened for this week.

Trainer C. Jackson has tired of Sunny Vale, and has passed him on to J. Fryer, who intends putting the gelding to hurdle racing. Sunny Vale has plenty of pace, but appears to be unreliable. While on his recent visit to New Zealand, “Cardigan,” of the “Australasian,” had a chat with M. McCarten, and Runnymede, on whom McCarten scored in the New Zealand Derby and Stead Gold Cup, was discussed. In relating the conversation he had with the New Zealand jockey “Cardigan” had the following :—"McCarten told me that while Runnymede may not be a champion, he is a good, game customer with pace, and also stays well. He summed it up in this way: ' You know Rapine in Australia; well, the old gelding has not slipped back very much, and Runnymede defeated him on his merits. You can therefore form a correct opinion of Runnymede through Rapine ’ ” Rapine, the winner of the Auckland Cup, who cost 450 guineas as a yearling, has won about £15,000 in stakes. His successes include the Auckland Cup, Wellington Cup, Trentham Gold Cup, New Zealand St. Leger, Great Northern St. Leger, and three important weight-for-age events in Australia. It is stated that an inquiry has been made for the ’chaser Llewellyn, on behalf of an English client. The price asked is 2000 guineas. Llewellyn has shown himself to be more than useful over obstacles, and one of his best performances, from a weight-carrying point of view, was to run Hypothesis to a neck with 12.13 in the saddle in the last Pakuranga Hunt Club Cup.

The chances are that one or two Ellerslie stables will be represented at the Wellington meeting this month. W. H Patterson may bring Surveyor and Pelham, and N. Cunningham may make the trip with Lady Ridicule, though nothing definite has yet been decided upon. Petal is the name that has been given to the half-sister by Crown Imperial II to Lipsol. Like her relative. Petal was bred at Porangahau by Sir George Hunter. The Cheat, Lava, and Enare, who were sold by J McCombe at Wmgatui, have all won races since they left T^ lC ‘ carton, and they must rank as rare bargains for their new owners. Comic Song developed lameness aftei running in the Invercargill Cup. He seemed sound enough before the race, and the fact that he suffered mterfer. ence whilst running . may have been responsible for the development of the trouble. Mr D J. Barry stated last week that he tried to give away Autumn at one stage of his career, but the man he gave him to thought he was going to die and asked Mr. Barry to taxe him back again. Mr. Barry now has good reason to be pleased that he did not . dispose of this promising sire. One of the features of the summer meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club was the successful run of the Hastings trainer V. H. Collelo. Horses trained by him won four races, Niue of Spades accounting for a double, and Wristlet and Plain Sailing each securing an award, while Mixed Heather got a second and third placing, Wristlet acting as runner-up, and Plain Sailing securing a third placing.

WELLINGTON HANDICAPS

After the brief lull following upon the epidemic of holiday racing the handicaps for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting, which make their appearance this morning, will be food for thought for students of racing. Naturally the Cup and Telegraph Handicap take precedence, and in each event the main task of the handicapper has been to place upon common ground the form of the winners at the various meetings both north and south. With a particularly good class field engaged in the Cup it is not surprising to note that there are only three horses on the minimum. As generally expected after his deeds in Auckland, Count Cavour is at the top of the list. He will have plenty of _ friends with 9.6. He carried 8.13 in the Auckland Cup to a great horse in Rapine, and was voted unlucky. He carried 9.8 in the Racing Club Handicap, one mile and a half, running a close third to Te Monanui (8.11) and Transformer (7.0), and on the last day of the meeting defeated Rapine at weight-for-age over a mile and a half, carrying 9.0. Te Monauui’s form at Auckland proved that he Was still on the upgrade, as after carrying 8.7 into third place in the Auckland Cup behind Rapine 9.8 and Count Cavour 8.13, he improved on that showing by beating a very representative field in the Racing Club Handicap with 8.11, Count Cavour 9.8 being third. The difference cf 111 b. on that occasion has been reduced to 51b. Musketoon showed excellent form at the zluckland spring meeting, but failed at the summer meeting, but if produced at his best at 9.1 he cannot be written out of the possibilities. The Banker 9.0 is not badly treated on his Riccarton form, although what he showed at Auckland was not up to expectations, as he was no nearer to a place in any of his starts there than fourth in the Cup. The Banker may go better on a lefthanded course, and with the advantage in weights there will be plenty to say that the New Zealand Cup winner may turn the tables. Listening Post is the crack performer of the southerners. lie won the Racing Club Handicap at Trentham twelve months ago, receiving 101 b. from Suggestion, and the latter was unlucky. Listening Post subsequently ran great races in his’ own territory, and on Boxing Day at Dunedin he won over a mile and a quarter, carring 9.8, subsequently running second at Wyndham over the same distance with 10.0 to Overdrawn 7.0, the mile and a quarter being run in 2min. 5 4-ssec. Suggestion is well known as one of out best performers. On his showing at Tauherenikau on New Year’s Day there are no serious consequences to his bleeding attack at Feilding in November, and with 8.10 must command respect. Grand Knight’s holiday performances have now placed him amongst the good ones. He has no credentials for a journey beyond ten furlongs, but won so well over that distance at Marton that with 91b. less the imported horse cannot be lightly considered. Royal Divorce lias shown himself equal to the best handicap company, though on his past performances there is just a suspicion that a mile and a half journey is beyond him when competing against the best horses. . At ten furlongs in Auckland he twice carried 9.1 into third place.. Enthusiasm had every chance to win the Manawatu Cup and' looked a good proposition for the second day, but she ran a shocking race. Even with 8.5 she will have to show greatly improved form to be considered amongst the dangerous division. Surveyor was last year’s winner with 8.8 in a 6.7 minimum, and despite his lack of form this season 3.2 makes him read well in, especially if he were to come back. Surveyor, however, is getting on in years and although he is an old wonder one prefers to’ look amongst the younger division for the likely winner. Tanadees showed fair form at Awapuni and failed at Tauherenikau. The class in the Wellington Cup is so much stronger that even at 8.0 he will not be one of the best fanced lot. Muraahi is another old horse with proved staying qualities in his favour. He ran two fourths at Auckland, but those who beat him there look likely to do it again. For a Derby winner Star Stranger, 7.11 (31b. under weight for age), reads well, even in a flattering handicap, and being the representative of a powerful and successful stable prjst take a high place amongst the probables. He was made favourite under 8.5 in the ten furlong handicap on the fourth day at Ellerslie, and finished fifth after a passage which could have been improved upon. Rapine won the Cup under 7.12 at the 6.7 minimum three years ago, and while Star Stranger may not equal the deeds of his stable mate, his form is quite good enough to say he will be one of the heavily supported bri. gade for the engagement under notice. Clarinda won the Manawatu

Cup under 7.12, but she had to do her best, and with 7.10 at Wellington she will need to produce some improvement. Treshaut has hardly shown the form required of a Wellington Cup winner, and Fool’s Paradise will probably be passed over by most people on account of his being an Absurd. He is a very courageous one, however, and has run well up to ten furlongs. If he has it in him to get a mile and a half he has every chance with 7.4. Waetea has shown that she is hardly up to first-class company even at light weights, and Star Ranger has failed to show much form since he won at Avondale. Baldowa represents good form in the south, and Tarleton has come_ down in the scale so much that he is now only lib. above the minimum. Even at that he does not. appeal. Gala Day ran second on the last day at Auckland, and Tommy Dodd was a winner at the Southland meeting. Neither may be class enough for a Wellington Cup, although the Southlander should not be dismissed. Martulla is just a useful welter performer, and Kalakaua does not on his form appeal as being good enough. Beacon Light has shown sufficient promise to be a dangerous candidate at the minimum were he to produce form. Star Stranger, Grand Knight. . The Banker and the top weight will probably take the fancy of earlv anticipators. REEFTON MEETING CUP WON BY PROSPERITY Bx Tblegratu—Press Association. Reefton, January 7.
