PIG IRON PRODUCTION
POSSIBILITIES AT ONAKAKA The possibilities of the birth of a large industry are said to be strengthened bv the latest reports regarding the operations of the Onakaka Iron and Steel Company. The works are ideally situated, the only drawback being that suitable coal is not available locally, but this difficulty has been met by the supply of good quality coal from Uie West Coast. Operations at the works were suspended during the construction of a haulage system for the transportation of coal from the wharf to the works and tlie manufactured pigiron from the works to the wharf. This undertaking has been completed, and the works are now reported to be in full swing again. It is claimed that the pigiron produced is of good quality and a good shape. On the major portion of the output a bounty of 12s. per ton will be payable by the Government to the company, and in respect of a small portion of the output, since the Act was amended last session, the bounty will be at the rate of £1 10s. per ton.
