SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS. The custom of providing an enjoyable time for seafarers was again followed during the festive- season by the Sailors' Friend Society. Ou Christmas Eve a social of a very happy nature was held in the institute, when men from ships in port indulged in merry games under tlx- guidance of Mr. James Moore, who was assisted by his workers. Merriment was added to the proceedings by the music provided by Jlrs. Courteney. The “bit o’ baccy’’ was not forgotten, and at a late hour tho happy party brokeup to the tunes of the season. . On Christinas Day Air. Moore, missioner. conducted the morning service, and spoke on “Causes for Hope.” Jliss Al. Spencer was instrumentalist. In the afternoon men met for games, sports, etc., in (ho institute, and there was a time of great merriment till 11.15. High tea. was served, and at it many queer stories were related by the seamen. Christmas letters ■ were ' found on each plate. Th - workers were presented with a testimonial written by a sailor and signed bv every man .at the table. Then camo a "smoko.” Inspiriting games followed and choice music by Mrs. Aletcalt and Messrs. Courtenay, Taicfy, amt Burt. Votes of thanks to tho many who had helned wore very warm and real. "Auld Lang Syne.’’ etc., followed by prayer, closed Christmas in a happy manner. ~ „ ~ Boxing Dav was a full one for the merrv party that left the institute for Karoii Park, where the round of games, rac-s, football, etc., caused the day to speed awav. all too . quickly Lunch and too were served by a band of workers, under the leadership of Mrs. J. .Monro. Just before dusk the party n-turiied to town bv special car. hen the insti(life was reached a snlendid conceiT. airanged bv Jliss V. Mueller, awaited the snri-tv’s guests. The performers were Mrs. Metcalf Ipmno), Misses Burnham, Mueller and ITaggart. and Master Ilaimart. The recalls were man'-. Merry games filled in the inl-.-rviils.
