(From Our Own Correspondent.) Carterton, December 26. A severe earthquake of several seconds’ duration, was experienced iu Carterton on Thursday afternoon. The Carterton police were advised on Thursday morning of the death at the Maori pa, Gladstone, of the infant child, aged six months, of Hema Taueki and Katarine Hema Taueki. The child was sleeping in a double bed with its mother, but with separate blankets, and at about 2 a.m. it was found that the child was dead. The death could not be accounted for, except that the child was suffocated by a shawl that covered it. At an inquest held before Mr. E. G. Eton, District Coroner, a verdict in accordance with the evidence was returned. The Wairarapa South County Council met on Thursday at Carterton. The Main Highways Board advised that metal used for maintenance repairs on roads should not contain stones larger than an inch. Authority was given to the chairman to permit persons to remove metal from the county’s side of the Waiohine River. The matter of giving permission for the cutting of grass seed on the roadsides, was left to the councillors for the riding. The Greytown Borough Council advised that they were unable to quote for tar. Inspector McGregor was appointed sanitary inspector for the county, in place of Inspector Milne, transferred to Napier. The Public Trust Office advised that from January the interest in local bodies’ sinking, and superannuation funds would be increased by a quarter per cent. A special meeting will be held on January 18 to pass special orders, and to fix the day for the statutory half-holiday for shops. Tenders are to be called for the erection of a swing bridge over the Tea Creek, in the Maungatarere Valley, providing the Government grant of £5O is still available. The request of Mr. H. W, Kemplin to bring certain lands within the water race area was approved. Two bad gullies on Thorne’s at Carrington are to be covered with flumings. The Public Works Department authorised a grant of £322 Us. Bd. (£1 for £1) subsidy, East CoastWestmere Road. A conference is to be held with the Greytown Borough Council over the proposed closing of the Main Road, and thereby diverting the traffic through Matarawa. The grant to the Carterton Library was increased by £l5. The Waiohine River is to be inspected, and if necessary a conference arranged with the Featherston County. The crusher is to be kept going for maintenance. Accounts totalling £767 2s. 7d. were passed for payment.
