HIGH WATER AT MANAWATU BAR
An interesting discovery was made a few days ago by Mr. Anderson, foreman for Mr. F. Goodman, while engaged in the construction of the railway bridge in the Turanganui River (states the Gisborne “Times”). Among the silt brought to the surrace was a Royal Humane Society’s bronze medallion which, on being cleaned, was found to have been awarded to G. Hawkins in 1922. Mr. Gil. Hawkins was a popular member of the Gisborne Swimming Chib and Life Saving Society, prior to his removal from Gisborne some two or three years ago. The medallion has been handed to Mrs. A. M. Beer, secretary of the Gisborne Swimming Club, who, on ascertaining the address of Mr. Hawkins, will forward the trophy to him. On a recent morning at about 8 o’clock, a party fishing by the first point past Clifton reported that the sea was literally alive with sharks tn groups of threes and fours (states the “Hawke’S Bay Tribune”). They came so close inshore that the fishermen were able to hit them with stones. Iwo sharks were at grips with each other and lashed violentlv about fighting. This spot is a favourite bathing place. Where is the fault which lias led to the New Plymouth telephone operators occasionally receiving electric shocks, ft was thought that some of the power service lines in New Plymouth might be contacting with the telephone, lines (states the "Dailv News”), but Mr. W. H. Huggett (electrical engtneer) told the Borough Council that a thorough inspection had been made of the whole of the system and U2 Wttlts had bees found,
