TAXATION IMPOSED IN NEW SOUTH WALES

Sydney, December 23. In the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Lang, the Premier, announced thatjt was proposed to impose a tax of os. in the £ on income derived by lilni companies from the sale or lease of motion picture films not manufactured in Australia. Mr. Lang explained that the reason for this action was that American firms had for many years been taking huge sums, out ot New South Wales without paying anything at all in taxation. These firms had established subsidiary companies in New South Wales, and had leased films to them, charging as much as 75 per cent, on the gross takings. The proposal received endorsement from all sides of the Chamber. Should ss. prove unsuitable, the Government reserves the right to alter the amount.
