The arrival of the steamer Arahura at Wellington from Picton on Saturday brought to a termination the vessel s last voyage in the Union Co.’s service. The officers of the ship took the opportunity of presenting to Captain A. H. Prosser a bronze smoker's pedestal. Mr. E. A. Gritfiths, chief engineer, who made the presentation, said that during the tune Captain "Prosser had been on the Arahura lie had by means of his impartial and decisive orders inspired the co-operation and respect of bis subordinates and caused them to realise that ‘there was at the helm a man of ability. In replying. Captain Prosser expressed the hoped that they would 'again some day be shipmates together. In conversation with a “Southland News” reporter the manager of a prominent music warehouse remarked that German go"ods which were beginning to creep into the local markets had not vet become evident in their stocks. This company dealt with only one German piano, which on account of its prohibitive price, has not a ready sale. The majority of pjanos sold are of English make, while -the American manufacturers have practically dropped out of the market. According to an Invercargill resident connected with the catering, business, the exhibition at Dunedin is affecting the local market considerably (states the “Southland News”). Eggs, he said, are 60 to 70 per cent, dearer than at this time last year, owing to the demand from Dunedin, while vegetables are also very difficult, to obtain at suitable prices. Ham is another foodstuff which is in great aemand in Dunedin, and the local market is considerably taxed.
