STATE GOVERNORS
PROPOSAL TO APPOINT AUSTRALIANS WEAKENING OF EMPIRE TIES FEARED By Telegraph.- Fresh Association fIoPVBTGHT Melbourne, August 20. The Council of the Victorian branch of the Royal Colonial Institute has issued a statement declaring that the proposal that future State Governors should be Australians would definitely weaken the ties between the various parts of the Empire, and so weaken it as a whole. The statement adds that men with a great knowledge of international affairs are necessary for these offices, and, in certain conditions, if Australians held such a position it might involve Australia in serious trouble.—Press Assn. IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT’S POLICY (Rec. August 20, 5.5 p.m.) London, August 19. The Colonial Office has not yet consid“red successors to the Earl of Stradbroke, Governor of Victoria, and Sii Matthew Nathan, Governor of Queensland, pending the retuqi of the Secretary of the Dominions, Mr. Leopold Amery, who is now holiday-making, when the Victorian and Queensland Governments will be consulted. The Colonial Office has not vet received any representations regarding State Gov ernorships, but the Imperial policy has remained unchanged since the days of Lord Milner, who recognised a State’s rights in regard to gubernatorial appointments, but there is strong objection to various States pursuing different methods.—Aus.-N.Z.
