REDUCTION OF NAVAL APPROPRIATIONS OPPOSED BY MR. WILBUR NEW CRUISERS AND MORE MEN WANTED By Telegraph—Press AssociationCopyright Washington, August 19. The Budget battle over the question of naval expenditure is so strenuous that Mr. C. D. Wilbur, Secretary of 1 the Navy, has decided personally to proceed to Swampscott to make an appeal to President Coolidge for larger appropriations. It is understood that he is proceeding to Swampscott this week. Mr. Wilbur has just returned from an inspection cruise of the Pacific Coast, in which he gathered that unanimously adverse views were held by naval men regarding the proposed reduction of the appropriations. It is understood that Mr. Wilbur will not only object to the reductions, but will urge the necessity for specific increases. These will include more money for the personnel, to bring the man power to 850,000, provision for six new cruisers, and ingreased expenditures on the naval bases on the Pacific Coast and at. Hawaii.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE DISASTER ON THE MACKINAC TWENTY DEATHS REPORTED FIFTEEN OF INJURED NOT LIKELY TO RECOVER New York, August 19. The disastrous accident on the steamer Mackinac, due to the bursting of the ship’s boilers, caused heavy casualties. There were 677 excursionists on board, and the latest news shows that 29 are dead, 2 are missing, and 52 were seriously burned. At least 15 of these are not likely to recover. The Mackinac, which was bound from Newport to Pawtucket, was passing the Newport naval training station when the explosion occurred. Apparently the cause of the explosion was the failure of a patch which had been put on one of the boilers just before the steamer sailed. The explosion occurred almost within a stone’s throw of the naval hospital; otherwise the casualty list would have been much heavier. Naval rescue parties worked with the greatest energy to get the passengers off the ship and to take the injured to the hospital.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
