NEW BUS SERVICE

KELBURN TO NORTHLAND Authority was granted by the City Council last night for the running of a bus service from the head of the Kelburn Tramway Co.’s line at Upland Road to Northland, and vice versa. Councillor 1. Aston asked whether it was not possible to put on some of the council’s own buses. Councillor R. A. Wright said they could not very well put their own buses on to feed the Kejjiurn tramway—a private enterprise. Councillor Aston agreed, but thought that the citv could bring Northland people right' into the city with their own buses. Councillor M. Luckie stated that this position had been brought about by the failure of the citizens to authorise the purchase of the Kelburn Tramway two years ago. Councillor G. A. Troup asked whethet there was room for two of these buses to pass, and at the same time allow room for pedestrians. .Some years ago it had been reported that the viaduct was not strong enough for trams. . Was it strong enough to take, in the middle of the span, two loaded buses? Their first consideration should be to protect life. Councillor J. Burns said that steps should be at'once taken to see if the viaduct was strong enough to take the buses. If there was an accident the council might be faced with serious claims. Councillor Luckie said they had to remember, too, the damage likely to be done to Upland Road by these buses. Councillor F. W. Manton said that the route had been tried out, and it was found that two buses were necessary. It had been proved to be a commercial proposition, and now the council wish, ed to stop it. They had made it possible to get home to Northland from the Town Hall in half-an-hour
