TRENTHAM RACES
FINE SPORT AT FLEET MEETING
NUKUMAI WINS LUDLOW HURDLES
SEATTLE HANDICAP TO TANADEES
Good sport was witnessed at Trentham yesterday when the first day’s racing of the meeting in honour of the visiting American naval squadron was held. Nukumai won the Ludlow Hurdle race after a fine race from Lucullent and Captain Sarto, and the principal flat event went to Tanadees from General Carrington and Kilfane. There was a large number of officers and men from the Fleet in attendance, and judging by their exultant yells after some of the finishes they were not finding the task of picking winners beyond them. The weather was mild and dull, and during the afternoon some rain fell, but not sufficient to interfere to any extent with the pleasure of the visitors. The local crowd was not so large as usual, but was good for an off day.
Nukumai won like a good horse. He was admirably handled by Bowden, and, save for a final effort after being prominent throughout the journey, he came out of a difficult finish with all the honours of the race. Lucullent ahd Captain Sarto, who filled the other places, both ran well, the latter particularly, as he was responsible for a
good deal of the pace setting. In the principal flat race the verdict went to the locally owned and trained I'anadees from General Carrington and
the southerner Kilfane. The lastnamed, who was favourite, did not appear to meet with a very good passage at a critical stage. Lady Fingers scored in the open sprint from Nancy Lee and Orchid, running well up to her form at the winter meeting last month. Orchid, more vigorously ridden out of the barrier, might have been the winner. The minor races were all well contested and provided interesting sport. FavI ourites fared well, winning five of the j eight races and being second in another. In only one race, the last, was a surprise sprung, the winner carrying less than ‘2.00 tickets. ’ Admiral Coontz and his staff, officers and men were the guests of the club, and all appeared to thoroughly enjoy their outing. Surprise was expressed that the judging in New Zealand was done by one man. In the States, they said, there are two judges and a referee. There was a mix-up in the railway service early in the day, and a good deal of the racegoing traffic was held up at Silverstream, arriving at the course more than half an hour late, and missing the first race. With the crowd smaller than usual the totalisator turn-over was moderate for a Trentham race-day, amounting to £32,860 on the eight races. The race track was soft and slow, but was very little affected by the showers during the afternoon. MEI,VILLE HURDLES.
General Carrington was scratched for the Melville Hack Hurdles, Peter Maxwell being established a firm favourite from Fort George, Askira, and Little River. Waimana took the lead from Fort George through the straight and down the hack their nearest attendants were Bestir and Gluemcnt-, with Peter Maxwell next. Fort George was done with before they hit tiie home turn, where Ghiement ran up to Waimana. They were together as they raced for the straight, and Peter Maxwell came up fast at the false rail. Ghiement led Peter Maxwell over the last hurdle, but in the run to the post Peter Maxwell prevailed by a length and a quarter, Gluemcnt beating Askari by three lengths, with Waimana fourth, followed by Bestir, Fort George, Muzzle, and Little River. Gold Streak was last. Puketoi’s ri-der-lost his irons, and he ran off the course at the mile post. Little River raced very unkindly. BOSTON TRIAL PLATE. The scratchings for the Trial Plate were Town Crier, Killute, Bonny Louisa, Gold Streak, Cooinda and Assert. All the money came for Father O’Flynn, Nine of Spades and Nadarino, the 'first-named being a hot order. They were the only three really in the race. First Acre began quickly and led Father O’J'lynn, Nadarino and Nine of Spades on to the course proper, but once in line the favourite drew out to score .with ease by four lengths from Nadarino, who stayed better than Nine of Spades after being two or three lengths to the bad at the false rail, beating him for second by a neck. Nearly six lengths further off Kilornni was fourth followed by Diogenes, Miss Ford, Glaive and First Acre. RICHMOND STEEPLECHASE. All started in the Richmond Hack Steeplechase, Birkenella being made a firm favourite from Sir Wai and Lady Comet with a good deal of support for Bonny Rill. Birkenella got into the first fence, the sod wall, and did not go so freely as usual afterwards, and none of the runners was free from mistakes, Sir Wai in particular jumping badly. The early leaders were Uncle Dave, and Ngahinepouri from Bonny Rill and Lady Comet but entering the last round Birkenella went up to second. At the top brush Bonny Rill joined Uncle Dave, Ngahinepouri and Birkenella, and Ngahinepouri fell. Bonny Rill then took the lead from Birkenella and she was not headed again, winning by four lengths from Birkenella, who beat Ladv Comet by eight lengths. Uncle Dave was the only other to finishe, Sir Wai being pulled off. MAINE HANDICAP. Musical was scratched for the Maine Handicap and of the 11 runners verysolid support was accorded Olympic who finished up under evens. Anticipate ami Gardant were the only others backed to any extent. The favourite won, but it was no good thing, as he had to be ridden desperately to beat Black Rock. From the start Olympic and Black Rock were first out from Sir Moment, Gardant, and Slump. Black Rock took up the pace at the six furlong post and led Sir Moment, Olympic and Gardant into the straight. Once in line Goldfinch got to work On the
favourite and ridden hard he got home by a bare half length from Black Rock. Gardant was four lengths off followed by Anticipate, Slump, Sir Moment and Mountain Top.
LUDLOW HURDLES. The scratchings of Highway, Te Kawa, Tinokaha and Askari left 12 runners for the Ludlow Hurdles. Nukumai was always favourite, and he finished ,up just over evens, the best supported amongst the others being Peter Amans, Omahu, Captain Sarto, Maunga, and Lucullent. The leaders over the first Nukumai. Down the back Molyneaux Oinahu, and Captain Sarto, and through the straight Molyneaux ami Otauru Kid led Captain Sarto, Oinahu, Prince Rufus, and Nukumai. At the mile post Otauru Kid and Captain Sarto paired m the lead from Molyneaux, and five lengths away came Ontahu and then Nukumai. Down the back Molvncux ran up to the leaders, and Nukumai and Omalfli began to close the gap, followed by Lucullent and Master Peter. Round tiie top-the leaders bunched, and Prince Rufus became prominent. Into the straight Otauru Kid, Captain Sarto, Prince Rufus, Lucullent, and Oinahu were in line abreast, just in front of Nukumai, Molyneaux having fallen back. At the last hurdle Otauru Kid, Omahu, Captain Sarto, and Lucullent were just leading Nukumai, and Lucullent drew to the front as they ran for | the judge. Nukumai challenged on the inner, and although it momentarily look- ! ed as if he would get squeezed back, he forged ahead over the last half-furlong ami won a fine race by a length. Captain Sarto was another three lengths off, and at intervals came Omahu, Prince Rufus, Master Peter, Peter Amans, and Maunga, with Molyneaux last. Omajiu and Master Peter both ran very good races. SEATTLE HANDICAP. All started in the Seattle Handicap, Kilfane being a good favourite from Passionate, but there was solid support for Tanadees. Lady Ben ami Kilfaire made the pace from Tanadees and Stream, followed by General Carrington and Kilfane, then Passionate and Zero Hour. Down the back Kilfaire led from Ladv Ben, and Zero Hour rushed up third, the order of the others being Tanadees and Stream, General Carrington, Kilfane, and Passionate. Round the top Kilfaire had a two lengths break on Eady Ben, Zero Hour, Tanadecs, and Stream, with General Carrington moving up. Kilfaire led into the straight from Lady Ben, Tanadees, and General Carrington. At the distance Tanadees and General Carrington drew clear, and in a good finish 'l'anadees won bv half a length. Kilfane, who got stopped four and a half furlongs from home, staved on into third place, two lengths behind General Carrington, with Lady Ben a neck behind him. At an interval came Passionate, followed by Stream and Zero Hour. NEVADA HANDICAP. All started in the Nevada Handicap, Lady Fingers being made a slightly better favourite than Archeen. Lucius, Nancy Lee, and the bracket Rose of Athens and Alabama were the best supported of the others. Nancy Lee, Alabama, and Lucius began best, and running for the straight the order was Nancy Lee, Alabama, Rose of Athens, Orchid, Some Red, and Lady Fingers, with Archeen handy. As they ran fot the straight Orchid headed the field and straightened up in front of Nancy Lee, Ladv Fingers, Archeen, Tinohari, and Some Red. At the distance Lady Fingers caught the leaders, and all out won by a length from Nancy Lee, who beat Orchid bv a length. Archeen was a neck off, and then there was a gap to Potoanui, Some Red, Tinohari, Lucius, Merry Day, and Rouex. TEXAS HANDICAP. Elysianor and Kilmar were scratched for the Texas Handicap, leaving a field of 24 from which backers expected the winner to come from. Forgery, King’s Folly, Ring Potoa, or Gardenia. They were fairlv accurate in their summing up, as Forgery only just got beaten, and Ring Potoa was also on the scene at the 'business end, but the winner came from the unfancied division after a great finish. From the start the favourite, who had drawn the rails, got out well, and with King’s Folly and Indian Sage was the most prominent as they ran for the straight. At the distance Forgerv looked a comfortable winner, but inside the last furlong Ring Potoa on the inner, and Highflown on the outside, came fast. Highflown, who had drawn one of the extreme outside positions, put in a brilliant finish, and too Late Bagby got to work on Forgery, Highflown winning from Ring Potoa by a nose, with Forgery lialf-a-bead behind Ring Potoa. Two lengths away Star Shell was fourth, Indian Sage fifth, ami then came Mountain Jcau and Star Ranger.
