STEAMERS COLLIDE
IN PORT PHILLIP COOMA AND OONAH BADLY DAMAGED (Rec. August 19, 8.50 p.m.) Melbourne, August 19. The inter-State steamers Cooma and Oonah collided in the bay _ off the Williamstown lighthouse. The Cooma was compelled to return to port.--Press Assn. I (Rec. August 19, 10.35 p.m.) 1 Melbourne, August 19. When tbe vessels collided a hole about the size of a doorway was torn in the Oonah’s side and water was found in the forward hold. The Cooma was damaged for twenty feet from between tbe bow and bridge on the starboard side, all above the waterline. After the impact the Cooma glanced off to the Oonah’s stern, and one of her anchors was torn off. The impact was so severe that passengers on the Oonah were thrown off their feet, but none were injured, Had the Cooui'’ not glanced off after she struck i she would have gone right through the Oonah. One woman in the latter vessel had onlv iust left, her cabin when it was completely wrecked. Many of the passengers suffered from shock. The Cooma’s voyage was cancelled. T’’e Cooma is owned by the Australian Steamship Proprietary, Limited, and was bound for Sydney. The Oonah is owned bv the Union Steamhip Company,' and was returning to Melbourne | from’ Tasmania.—Press Assn.
