TEACHERS’ TRAINING COLLEGE
LEAVING CERTIFICATES TO BE ISSUED. At the monthly meeting of the Education Board yesterday Mr. J. J. Clark moved: "That the principal of the Training College he asked to furnish a leaving certificate to trainees leaving the Training College, showing any qualifications they may possess." ':p. London seconded the motion, remarking that the lion. in the path appeared to be the grading system. _ Mr. Gould, principal of the Training College, said that the regulations mad" no provision for specialisation in training, such as was done in other parts of the world. The college had been so undermanned that it had been ini possible to give more than a general education. He intended to issue certificates to students, setting forth anv special studies they had taken. Mr. London deplored the present position of education. Teachers who specialised in infant work, he said, were just as important as those who taught the higher subjects. Mr. Moss said the position was a difficult one, as they had teachers now objecting to special appointments. Mr. Gould said it was the system of appointments which was so wrong. A teacher who specialised had no guarantee that his special studies_ would be considered. He was afraid that a college certificate would not “cut any ice.” Mr. Clark’s motion was carried.
