THE RACING WORLD

FLEET MEETING TO-DAY

NOTES AND COMMENTS

TRENTHAM FLEET MEETING FIELDS FOR TO-DAY The Wellington Pacing Club’s complimentary race meeting to the officers and men of the American fleet will commence at Trentham to-day. The fields in the majority of events are large, and there should be some good sport. The fine weather of the last few days has had the effect of drying up the tracks considerably, and while they will bo on the soft side, they are in far better condition than they were for the winter meeting last month. The number of men to be entertained each day of the meeting has been increased from 500 to 1000, and there will also bo a considerable number of officers in excess of the official party. Many of them are going out as the private guests of club members. The visitors will no doubt be interested in the working of the electric totalisator. Many of them, no doubt, saw the totalisator in operation at Randwick, but at Trentham they will miss the roar of the bookmakers’ ring. The quietness and orderliness of our race crowds was a feature which struck the members of the British squadron when the meeting wag held in their honour 12 months ago. Form at recent meetings should be worth following. The first race is timed to start at 11.30 a.m., and the day's card is as follows: —

MELVILLE HURDLES HANDICAP, of 260 bovb. One mile and a half.

General Carrington may start in the Seattle Handicap. Peter Maxwell will find solid support on his running last month. Little River never looked better and although a good many racegoers have passed him by us unreliable, he must bo always labelled a possibility.

BOSTON TRIAL PLATE, of 250 sovb. Six -■ furlongs.

Last month’s form draws attention to Nadarino, Father O’Flynn and Nine of Spades, Arrowboy goes fast.

RICHMOND STEEPLECHASE, of 250 bovb. Two miles and a quarter.

This is the smallest field of the day, but as is often the case may provide a good contest. Birkenella and Sir Wai both have form to recommend them. Bonny Rill may run well.

MAINE HANDICAP, of 250 bovb. Seven furlongs.

Mountain Top’s form is worth consideration. and Anticipate may go better than In- did at Riccarton. Gardant may meet with more luck than she did last month.

LUDLOW HURDLES HANDICAP, of 500 sovs. Oue mile and three-quarters.

The scratching of Highway, To Kawa. and Penury Pose have eliminated dangerous candidates. Nukumai promises to have plenty of supporters. He has a big weight and it may trouble, him, but he is a real good one. Maunga, Lucullont, and Captain Sarto, on Riccarton form, should run well, and of the remainder the northerners, Peter Amans and Prince Rufus may do best.

SEATTLE HANDICAP, of 400 bovb. One mile and a quarter.

Kilfane and Passionate both have recent form to commend them. They may find Stream a tough proposition before the post is reached. She is a full-sister to Kilfane. NEVADA HANDICAP, of 3CO sovs. Six furlongs.

Form is represented by Lucius and Lady Fingers, while Nancy Lee will only 'be troubled by the, long straight. With quick beginners like Orchid, Lady Fingers and Nancy Lee it should be ii true run race and a sprinter with a fair amount of stamina will be at an advantage. Lady Fingers runs a good six furlongs all the way. TEXAS HANDICAP, of 250 bovb. Five furlongs

Backers are set the usual Trentham last race problem. King's Folly was a good two-year-old and ne looks well enough forward to run out five furlongs. Kilmera. King Potoa, and Munutai all have form in their favour.

TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES Wednesday. The tracks dried a good deal during the preceding 24 hours, and although it was on off morning there' was a fair amount of galloping. Most of the work was done on No. 2 winter grass track, which was soft. Star Ranger sprinted the three furlongs down the straight in 40jscc., Bucephalus taking 42sec. on the sand.’ King’s Folly strode over ha'.?' a mile on the sand in 62sec. He appears a trifle thick in the wind, but worked freely, and is apparently fairly well forward. Nine of Spades sprinted four furlongs in 52sec., one of the best efforts of the morning.

Manutai and Lucius worked well, and Father O’Flvnn hit out boldly in a sprint down the straight. Bieck Rock, on the sand, took 40sec. for three furlongs. Waetea was better than Rouex in a three-furlong sprint in 43sec., and Highblown alone sprinted down the straight. Swift and Ardfinnan galloped half a mile in 53 2-ssec.

Demme worked freely, sprinting down the straight. Omahu was accompanied bv Lady Comet in a mite gallop, but they were going easily over the first furlong, and the last seven took lmin. 39sec. They, finished together. Omahu put a lot of dash into his work.

Bonibrook and Puwhero did pacing, Fireblight and Eerie also being confined to easy tasks.

Kilfane spurted down the straight, as did Nadarino and Minotus and Indian Sage and Quiescent.

Royal Pointer beat Mutu in a working gallop over six furlongs, in lmin. 31 sec.

Potoamu sprinted half a mile in 53 sec. Gardant and Twink finished well clear of Master Peter over the same ground in 54jsec. Lady Fingers (F. Waddell) was not all out to sprint three furlongs in 384 sec., moving well—a good gallop. Orchid alone sprinted half a mile in 51 4-ssec., the fastest of the morning. He carried a light weight. Tanadees gave Lady Ben and Zero Hour four or five lengths start ever a mile, and finished with Ladv Ben clear of Zero Hour, in lmin. 53sec. The first pair were going well at the post.

Sir Moment sprinted three furlongs in 40sec.

Bonnv Rill (H. McSweeney) jumped four fences well on the inside steeplechase course.

Some Red sprinted well down the straight. Stream was going easier than Gardenia at the end of half a mite in 52 4-ssec. Stream is very' well at the present time.

Tinohnri and Aeriform did a working gallop over six furlongs. Mountain Top got to the end of seven fmlongs in lmin. 36sec., going well. Little River, going over a lot more ground than General Carrington, was going just as well, if not better, at the end of a mile, run in lmin. 53sec., the first half in 54 4-ssec. Musical was not asked to dp more than easy pacing. Nancy Lee was pulling hard at the end of four furlongs with Kilmere, in 53sec. Peter Amans. Lucullent, Maunga, Passionate, and Uncle Dave were doing easy work. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "The Watcher,’’) Nominations for the' New Zealand Cup will close on Friday. Avondale Cup nominations are due the same day. Highway has been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington Racing Club’s Fleet meeting, and Penury Rose nnd Te Kawa have been scratched for the Ludlow Hurdles to-day. Cooinda has been withdrawn from the Trial Plate. R. Longley will arrive at Trentham to-morrow yvith Tigerland, who is to contest the 'Admiral’s Steeplechase on Saturday. Eerie, who >aced in the nomination of her trainer, E. Murtagh, last season, will carry Mr. J. Harle’s colours in the Admiral’s Steeplechase on Saturday, The appeal of R. Reed against his disqualification by the stewards of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be heard on Wednesday next. Reed left for Hastings yesterday, where he will ride work for J. H. Jefferd. A Sydney mesage states that Windbag is undergoing treatment and has been withdrawn from the training tracks for several days. Windbag, who is trained by G. Price, was Australia’s champion three-year-old at the close of last season. Earlv this season he commenced bv winning a six-furlong race at Randwick at the meeting held in honour of the American Fleet. He was marked off for distinctive honours in the big spring handicaps, including the Melbourne Cup, but recently he sustained an injury. At the time it was cabled as notlnng serious, but the, latest report indicates trouble. R. Sutherland returned this week from his unsuccessful trip to Sydney, where he had the misfortune to lose his hurdler, Le Forte, who broke, a leg while (schooling. He brought back and unlikely to race again. Sutherland and unlikely to race aagin. Sutherland states that R. W._ King is well, and that he has Pilliewinkle looking in nice healthy condition to start serious work for the spring meetings. Randwick is agreeing with Haze (writes “Pilot"). He is not a horse of exceptional appearance, but there is a

wirv toughness about him that appeals. He has shown liimsclf consistent witnout winning, and though his trainer says the company was inferior, that win not deter Sydney backers from supporting Haze in the first race he runs here. They have too mucn respect tor Mason’s judgment to believe Haze wou d be in Sydney unless he had an excellent chance of picking up a fair handicap.

WANGANUI NOTES Tuesday. The tracks on the Wanganui course have not as yet got over the received intermittently during past few weeks, and as a consequent: thev are slower than usual at tins time of the year (says the ‘ chr ?“* icle”). Over 50 horses are working each morning. Number one grass was open for fast gallops. , , The first out were Motley (trainer) and Deluge (W. Mitchell). They cantered round to the two furlong pos and sprinted home. ~ Wembley (Mitchell) galloped halt a mile, cutting out the first two furlongs in 26 3-ssec., and the four in 54 l-ssec., without being pressed. Kilburn (D. C. Watts) and the filly from Hermia (J. Barry) were set a similar task, and they were both hitting out well as they passed the post together in 53 4-ssec., the first quarter occupying 27sec. Alaric (Watts) jumped off from tne five furlong post, but was not out on a time-making mission. Alerle (J. Barry) cut out half a mile in 53sec., moving nicely , all tne way, the final quarter occupying M " The Thorn and Anklet strode out over seven furlongs at a good threequarter pace. ■ . . , Dubious (Ward) went pleasingly over four furlongs, and could have done much better. The first two occupied 25 4-ssec., and the second quarter 26 4-ssec.. making 52 3-ssec. for the half-mile. . . Black Cat, with a light boy in the saddle, galloped four furlongs in 54 3-ssec., easing down over the last fU T.°ngikai (J. Walker) and Mask (Mitchell) jumped off from the five furlong peg, and were joined at the halt mile bv Attractive (Knapp). The first pair got to the end of the first quarter in 24 4-ssec., and the three furlongs in 37 l-ssec., with Mask (who made a greatly improved showing on his recent outings) a couple of lengths ahead of Tangikai at the post in Innn. 5 l-ssec. Attractive finished a shade in frontof Mask, his time for the half mile being 52’ l-ssec., from a slow beginning, the first quarter occupying 2a “ Royal Divorce (J. Barry) was going well 'after taking Imin. 21 l-ssec. for six furlongs, the first three being left behind in 40sec. and the half-mile in 53 3-ssec. Cooinda sprinted home three fuilongs, the last quarter being run in 28sec. .... Bonny Dawn (W. Tippetts) hit out smartly in the early stages of a gallop over five furlongs, cutting out the first two in 25 l-ssec., and the three in 38sec., to do the full distance in Imin. 6 2-ssec. The Greenback filly staved on better than she did on Saturday morning. The three Kilbroney colts In R. O’Donnell’s charge galloped three furlongs. Bool’s Paradise, with a light boy up, was sent six furlongs, and galloped the first half in very smart time, winding up his task moving freely. The first quarter was left behind in 25 l-ssec., the three furlongs in 37 2-ssec., and the half-mile in 50 3-ssec., the last quarter taking 28 4-ssec. The time for the full six furlongs was Imin. 19 2-5 aec.

Gaillard (Mitchell) and Ora’s Delight (Ward) were companions in a half-mile, and the latter was going ns well as, if not better than, her companion in the best gallop of the morning over the distance. The first two furlongs were reeled off in 24 Ct-ssec., and the last two in 26 4-5 sec., making 51 Lssec. for the half mile.
