Roads were very rough; in some parts mere tracks. Wo were warned we had no hope of getting through even in a big car owing to the weather—th? rain fell in torrents all the way. Second day, Whangarei to Kaeo, where heavy rain forced us to spend the night. From Kaeo to Whangaroa, via Maunganui, roads were very bad. Had a spin on the 90-mile Beach in the evening. From Kaitaia to Whangarei roads very hilly and loose shingle—going extremely heavy. Whf Hgarei to Dargaville very rough. Left Dargaville 10.30 a.m. and reached Auckland 11 p.m.. via Waiwera and Heltnsville. Auckland to Rotorua via Rangiriris to Hamilton, running time 3 hours and 10 minutes. The Rangiriris a raoing track to Mamukau where grey clay 18in. deep was encountered—roads saturated. Opotiki to Whakatane and Tauranga very rough. Thames, Waihi, and Faeroa, thence back to Auckland. Total distance 1450 miles—time 11 days—roughest weather conditions—consumption 33 miles per gallon. Have motored all over New Zealand and never experience 1 such bad conditions—no trouble whatever.
