A letter was received from the Petone League Football Club agreeing to the council's conditions for the use of the foreshore for training purposes, and installation of additional light. The council agreed to the request of Cjo Primo Minister to assist in raising funds for a memorial to the late Mr. Massey, and decided to arrange for the opening of a subscription list. The Railway Department is to be asked to clear its land of gorse. It was decided not to grant Mr. B. G. The borough inspector (Mr. Gough) strongly opposed any alteration in the existing speed limit. A suggestion that green shades be placed over the lights at the end of' Cuba Street and at the intersection of Jackson and Cuba Streets, was held over pending the installation of a "silent policeman.” The engineer was instructed to devise some improved scheme for the filtration of the water suppy. The engineer reported that buiding permits tc. the vane of £5060 were issued during May, making a total value for this year of £14,395. The inspector reported eleven cases of infectious diseases in the borough during May. There wore six cases of scarlet fever, three of diphtheria, and two of. tuberculosis. One hundred and thirteen drivers’ licenses were issued during May. The Reserves Committee report, which was adopted, stated that the town clerk had been requested to write to the Wellington Rugby Union and bring under its notice the possibility of it providing some movable device for protecting, when necessary, tho exposed ends of the grandstand on the Recreation Ground during wet weather. In reply to a question concerning council employees, the engineer stated that the rule had always been that in wet weather casual labourers had to stand off, and their pay stopped in consequence. At present the casuals were more numerous, than usual. Councillor Jacobsen asked that the engineer review the position in order to see if some sort of employment could not be found for these nien until the weather became fine again. The Mayor pointed out that a matter such as that should bo dealt with when the estimates were being considered.
