To-morrow is the club’s "birthday,” it having been fornied at a dinner held in the old Panama Hotel, Taranaki Street, on Friday, June 16, 1876. This social evening was the outcome of an exciting match, in which the final score was: Town 24 wins, Civil Service 23, drawn 3. For some years past Mr. AV. F. Barraud '»s been the only foundation member on the club’s books. The pioneer hon. secretary. Mr. W. T. Thane, who gave up regular play some years ago, is still a resident of this city. He attended the cluli's recently held 49th annual general meeting, and gave an exceedingly interesting account of the club’s activities in its earlier years, when contests against the Civil Service and also against Parliamentary teams were prominent and .most enjoyable features. During the 49 years of the club’s existence it has had 6n presidents, and 16 different "locations.” It is interesting to recall that an earlier AWllinglnn Chess Club was formed by the late Mr. C. P. Powles on June 20. ISG6. This club became defunct in the early ’seventies. OTAGO V. CANTERBURY. Seventeen boards worn used in the recent telegraphic match between these two clubs. AVhen play ceased the score was: Otago C.C. 81- wins, Canterbury Gt. and two games are marked incomplete. These are to bo adjudicated on by the Auckland section of the New Zealand Adjudication Board. Southern reports agree in forecasting a win for Otago. The most that the Canterbury Club is hoping for is to make an even score (6—6) at the first 12 boards, which count for the club championship of the Dominion. The Otago v. Auckland fixture is schedule to begin on Saturday evening next.
