CUSHIONS ON HIRE
COMFORT FOR RAILWAY TRAVELLERS The latest innovation which the Railway Department lias adopted is the hire of cushions to travellers in the Main Trunk cars. Although described as cushions, they are really fine fat pillows, and the extent to which the}’ arc being availed of by passengers may be gauged bv the fact that during tiie last three weeks 1000 have been hired, and the demand keeps on increasing. Cleanliness is made a special feature by the Department in dealing with the cushions, which really have three "skins.” Above the ordinary ticking cover is a second slip cover of the same material which is removed and washed regularly, and then on top of all is the white pillow slip. This is taken off mid laundered at the end of each journey. Thus the interests of both health and comfort arc considered, and the comments of the public are everywhere favourable.
The system or supply is singularly free from “red tape.” The passenger pays a nominal fee 'ls.), is handed the pillow, uses it without check or interference in any way en route, and at the end of the journey leaves it in the car as lie would a discarded newspaper. In anticipation of an extremely heavy demand during the summer months, the Department'has in hand special arrangements for the expeditious supply cf cushions during rush periods As a result of the success of the experiment on the Main Trunk it is rot unlikely that the railways in other suitable districts may be favoured with an extension of the cushion supply svstem.
