Bishop Cleary, of Auckland, is a visitor to Wellington. Traffic Inspector McCanty, of the corporation staff, has undergone a serious operation in , a private hospital. ’ Inspector McCanty is well known as. the officer who inspects all motor vehicles annually prior to the issue of licenses. Mr. G. J. 15. Bickford, who has been manager of the Dannevirke branch of the Bank of New Zealand for 29 years, retired on Thursday on superannuation the occasion being marked by a; representative gathering of the business community, who paid eulogistic tributes to Mr. Bickford as a banker, and to his work as a public man and citizen. A citizens’ presentation is to be made later. —Press Association. One of the founders of the New Zealand kauri gum industry, Mr. J. 15. Banks, died in a private hospital in Auckland on Thursday, telegraphs our special correspondent. The late Mr. Banks was SO years of age, was one of the first New Zealanders to make direct shipments of kauri gum to London, and for many years was associated with the industry at Coromandel. He arrived in New Zealand 60 years ago, and took up his residence at Thames, where he was engaged in gold mining and business. Later he participated in the inauguration of the kauri gum industry on Coromandel Peninsula, working up a large business as a gum merchant. Deceased is survived bv his wife, four sons, and four daughters. The sons are Mr. 15. G. Banks (superintendent of the Wnihi Gold Alining Company), Air. J. H. Banks (superintendent of the Waihi Gold Alining Company’s milling operations ,nt Waikino), Air. E. J. Banks (of Melbourne), and Air. C. A. Hanks (mining engineer, of Vancouver). The daughters arc Alesdnmes J. Anderson, of Hamilton, B. 11. Stafford, of England, C. Bell, of Auckland, and F. Cramer-Roberts, of Rhodesia.
