THE MAYORALTY
STATEMENT BY MR. G. MITCHELL APPOINTED MANAGER FOR MUNT, COTTRELL AND CO. “The position which I am taking up,” stated Mr. G. Mitchell yesterday, “is that of manager of the firm of Hunt, Cottrell, and Co., Ltd., and the duties will commence on May 1. The very touching appreciations of all the Press and numerous friends throughout the city have paid the accounts in full for all my services rendered on the field and in public life. They have disturbed my conscience, and made me feel perhaps I decided wrongly. It was with very great regret indeed that the decision was come to. I believe God did not give us talents for selfish ends alone, but rather to use them for the good and happiness of his people amongst whom we are privileged to live. My life and actions have been dictated by this belief, and at the sundown of this short life no reward will be sweeter than a conscience satisfied that we have served our country and our people. On Monday last I came to the cross-roads, and took the one which my friends in their desire for my personal welfare thought best. Their decision was unanimous, and based on the clearest commonseuse in my interest. The expressions of regret at my decision on every hand and faith in my public principles have overwhelmed me, and I only trust that I may continue to serve the city in whatever capacity I am) best fitted.” One of the terms of Mr. MitchelWfl appointment is that he shall not be a candidate for the Mayoralty or City Council, but no objection is taken to his continuing to interest himself in the affairs of the Wellington Harbour Board.
Rumours fill the air as to who, if any, will, be selected as candidate for the Mayoralty in place of Mr. Mitchell, retired. Names are fairly buzzing at every street corner where men are gathered together. But so far there is nothing to justify any definite conclusion as to who will be the elect of the Civic League. Mr. Leu McKenzie, who stood at the last Mayoral election, has been urged to try his hick at the poll once more, but from present indications lie is not a likely starter. Mr. IL D. Bennett’s name has been mentioned, but he is silent as to his intentions.
Mr. C. B. Norwood has also been referred to as a possible candidate, but he has already replied definitely in the negative. What the Civic League will decide cannot be stated at present, and there is no likelihood of anything authoritative being known as to its cleet until Monday evening next.
