TRIAL BY JURY
UNUSUAL POINT DECIDED. An unusual point was decided bv Mr. C. R. Orr Walker. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court vesterdav. The case was that of Walter Oswald Wilkinson, who was charged with stealing five bottles of wine, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company, and the question at issue was the value of the wine. The original value charged was £5, but that was subsequently amended to £1 14s. 2d. Mr. W. E. 'Leicester had objected that the amendment precluded his client’s right to go before a iurv. and the Magistrate agreed to hear evilence on the question of value. After hearing the evidence His Worship held that he must interpret “value" according to its ordinary meanT of market value, and the lowest he would fix for the wine was Bs. 4d. per bottle, lie accordingly ruled that Wilson had the right to elect trial by
