JUSTICES’ ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of Justices’ Association of Wellington states that the vear closed with a membership of 3?7, an increase of 71 members as against 61 for the preceat g year. There are, however, says the report, many justices who are still non-members whom we would like to have with us, and we urge our members to keep this in mind and assist the endeavour to secure new members to strengthen our association. The balance sheet shows a satisfactory position, the total capital being £265 IBs. 2d., an advance of £93 10s. Bd. on the year’s transactions. “A Dominion Conference of representatives from the several associations was held at Wellington, commencing on September 30 last. Over 26 delegates attended. Messrs. Hanlon, Armit, Keir, and Salek represented the Wellington association. Addresses were delivered bv His Worship the Mayor, the Hon. the Minister of Justice and the Under-Secretary. A great deal, ot business was transacted,, the most important being the constitution of 'The Federation of Honorary Justices Association of N.Z.,’ and the appointment of a Federal Council. . Mr. R. D. Hanlon was elected president, and Mr. I. Salek lion, registrar. . “During the year visits were paid by the council to the prisons at Wl Tako (Trentham), The Terrace, and Point Halswell Reformatory.. The justices were courteously received and inspected the several prisons. Many compliments were paid the staff for the kinder treatment used nowadays towards prisoners, and the educational methods to improve the conditions of the prisoners were much approved by the visitors.”
