NELSON NOTES
(From Our Own Cnrreenondent.) Nelson, March 21. A special meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club held last evening discussed the utilisation of the extra permit recently allotted the club. After the matter'had been gone fully into it was decided to hold a day’s racing on May 9. following the Marlborough meeting, that not more than £750 be given in stakes, and that eight events be placed on the programme. A proposal was made that the ten shilling totalisator be abolished, but a vote decided by a close majority to retain it.
The Newman Shield match between Nelson (holders) and Marlborough was concluded at the Park this morning, Nelson winning easily by an innings and 28 runs. Marlborough in then first strike made 71, to which Nelson responded with 185. Tn their second innings the visitors’ third wicket fell with the score at 46, and the next four batsmen were disposed of without addition to the total. The tail saved the side from utter collapse, the innings closing for 86. Scores: M. Neal, 5; Robinson. 9; McAlpine, 15; H. Neal, 11; Hastilow, 0; R. Neal, 0: W. Harman, 0; Taylor, 6; Tarrant, 8; O’Sullivan, 17; C'heeseman, notout, 3; extras, 12: total, 86. Bowling: S. Newman, four wickets for 32 runs; Giblin, four for 13: Fletcher, two for 16; Saxon, none for 11; Neale, none for 0. 3'he City Council has just completed tar-sealing' its portion of the _ NelsonTahunanui road, and a great improvement has been made. Good progress is also being mad*; by the County Council in tar-sealing the main road from Stoke to Richmond. A complimentary social was tendered to-night to the Hawke Cup cricket team which has successfully defended the title on five occasions this season. The proceedings were enthusiastic, and complimentary references was made to the wav the team had upheld the honour of the province. The lad Ken. Walkev, who was seriously injured in the Maitai Valley' on Thursday bv falling on a crosscut saw, is holding his own, and hopes arc entertained for his recovery. The golf season was opened this afternoon on the Tahunanui links. There was a verv large attendance. The dav was beautifully fine and the course was found to be in fair condition.
