PERSONAL ITEMS

The Minister of Defence (Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) arrived from the South Island on Sunday. Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P. for 'the Bay of Plenty, is visiting Wellington, and will return north to-day. Mr. Isaac Chapman, general manager of Abermain .Seaham Collieries, Ltd., Sydney, N.S.W., accompanied by Mrs. Chapman and Miss Chapman, arrived in Wellington by the Marama on a holiday.

Reference to the death of the late Under-Secretary of Justice, Mr. C. E. Matthews, is made in the annual report of the Wellington Justices of the Peace Association. The association records its appreciation of the valuable work done by Mr. Matthews, and its sympathy with Mrs. Matthews and family’in their bereavement.

On Sunday, Mr. R. Tait, senior, of Taitville, • Wellington, celebrated his ninety-fourth birthday, and received messages of congratulation aud good cheer from far and near. Mr. Tait is a native of the Shetland Islands, and prior to coming to New Zealand he was an architect and builder in Scotland, where he was also the proprietor of large mills. Mr. Tait can still read without the aid of spectacles.

The death of seven members is recorded in the annual report of the Wellington Justices of the Peace Association. They are Messrs. H. Brenklev (Masterton), J. R. Bills (Otaki), H. R. Waldcgrave (Palmerston North), and Colonel R. J. Collins, and Messrs. A. Ferguson, 11, Hume, and J. Reid, of Wellington. With the relatives of the deceased the association tenders its deepest sympathy.

Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, director of the firm of Messrs, A. S. Paterson and Co., will leave on a trip to by the lonic on April 28. Whilst in Europe, Mr. Shirtcliffe will take the opportunity of visiting Geneva, where bis son-in-law, Major Harston, is undergoing treatment for tuberculosis at the hands of Dr. Spablinger. Major Harston practised i law at Taumarunui on his return from I the war, but. subsequently developed tuberculosis. He was extremely ill when he left New Zealand, but recent reports give a very satisfying view of the progress he is "making" under the new , and' much-discussed treatment menj tioned.
