SIR H. RHODES AND THE ELECTION
MINISTER’S NON-COMMIT-TAL ATTITUDE
Commenting upon his political position in relation to the general election to be held at the end of the year, the Minister of Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) yesterday stated that liis constituents at Ellesmere had been pressing him to stand again following his. utterance that it was not his intention to again seek Parliamentary honours. He repudiated a statement published in the Christchurch “Press” a few days ago to the effect that the Reform Party organisation had urged him to reconsider his decision on the ground that the prospects of his holding the seat for the Government would be enhanced bv his own rather than any other candidature. The Minister intimated that he had not discussed the matter with the partv organisers, although he assented it was quite true that if he did continue his membership of the House it would be on the understanding that he would not accept Cabinet rank, in view of the state of his health. Sir Heaton Rhodes, however, was non-com-mittal as to whether he would submit himself for re-election.
