BOYS’ INSTITUTE
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Boys’ Institute was held last night. Mr. Justice Ostler occupied the chair. In addressing the meeting, the chairman stated that the work of the institute should be encouraged, for it tended to make the world better for posterity, which was one of the great objects of life. In discussing the report, several speakers made feeling reference to the work of the late Mr. J./W. Butler. The report, which has already been published, was passed. The balance-sheet showed, for the first time in the 31 years since the institute was founded, a deficit of £459. Mr. L. T. Watkins sgid that- the loss was perhaps .the best thing that could have .happened. It would bring before the public of Wellington the work of the organisation. A loss of £3OO on the bath had not been a real loss, because it was a means of serving the boys of the city Ihe boarding establishment had lost £6OO, but that also had been justified as the institute provided one of the best boarding-houses in the city for boys in difficult circumstances. The balancesheet was adopted. The president (Mr. G. A. Troup), in his address, said that it had been a sad year. Four people who had served the institution, Mrs. W. H. S. Moorhouse and Messrs. J. E. Green, J. W. Butler anil T. Shields, had died, and had been a great loss. Tfcose present should not be deterred by a setback of a few hundred pounds. The spirit of faith and self-sacrifice would bring them through. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr. G. A. Troup; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. Hislop, L. T. Watkins, and C. S. Moore; secretary, Miss M. Wills; treasurer, Mr. G. E. Brown’; committee of management, Messrs. H. Leah, W. A. Parton, p. W. Banks, C. Odliti, J. M. Morice, J. W. McDonald, and —. Wallace, Mesdames Hislop, McKerrow and Bell; honorary physician, Dr. T. B. Corkill; honorary auditor, Mr. R. Wilberfoss; honorary solicitors, Messrs. Gray and Jackson. A committee was appointed to wait on the Governor-General to seek his consent to election as patron. A vote of thanks to those who had held office for the year was passed.
