WESTPORT’S NEEDS

DEPUTATIONS TO MINISTER. Bv Telegraph.--Press’ AssociationWestport, March 20. The Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Mines and Marine) arrived at Westport this evening and received deputations. The chairman and secretary of the General . Labourers’ Union brought up the matter of Harbour Board workers who are members of the General Labourers’ Union, and said that when the Public Service Commissioner visited Westport in February if pointed out that trie agreement had existed before the Government took over the harbour under which the employees were better off in regard to wages and conditions than they were to-day. The Commissioner had promised that the matter would be gone into, and he believed in some cases relief would he given. However, no information had since been received from the Commissioner.

The Minister promised to have Inquiries made. A deputat ion from the Buller Progress League waitsd on the Minister to urge the sneely comp’ctjon of the WestportGreymcuth coastal road, and especially the erection of the bridge over the Fox River, stressing the scenic and commercial aspects of this road. . The deputation also urged the expeditious construct ion of the Buller Gorge railway and better cranage on the wharves at Wcstnort to enable vessels to be loaded at all states of the tide. The Ministir promised to present their representations to his The Hon. W. If. Mclntyr° brought up various county matters, an* Mr. J. Bradley (president of the Westport School cf Alines) made representations regarding che school, stressing the need for an assistant for instruction in subsidiary schools and in the mining township.

Regarding the harbour, the Minister said it was a strategical harbour and the policy of the Government was to make it as up-to-dato as possible. The Under-Secretary of Marine, who was with him, would remain at Westport a few days to go into the. important matters mentioned. The Minister will leave for Little Wnngnnui and Karamen to-morrow, returning to Wcstnort on Sunday and proceeding to Reefton tho same dnv.
