RANGITIKEI MEETING

MANAWATU WEIGHTS

RANGITIKEI MEETING

MARTULLAS HANDICAP RATIONAL WINS THE SPRINT By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.” Bulls, March ‘2l. The Rangitikei meeting was concluded at Bulls on Saturday in fine weather. The chief handicap, the Fraser Memorial, was won by the locallytrained Martulla, who had run second in the Cup the previous day. Rational beat four opponents in the Greatford Handicap. There were several veryclose finishes during the day, and in a couple of races the defeat of the favourite resulted in the posting of doublefigure dividends, while, had the second horse in the Hurdles been successful a sensational price would have been hoisted. There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £18,639, as against £16,942 on the second day last vear, a total for the meeting of £36,862, as compared with last year’s £33,019, an increase of £3863 The Alaric inquiry was concluded, the stewards deciding to take no action.

MAIDEN HANDICAP. All started in the Maiden Handicap, Red Imp ' being made -favourite from Hallownoon. Master Lucerne began well from inside position, and led Hallownoon, Grand Lupin, and Red Imp down the back and round the turn. Kvla put in an appearance entering the straight, but Master Lucerne, ridden out, beat her by a head. Hallownoon was a length away, followed by Novar, Red Imp, and Lady Sanforte. GREATFORD HANDICAP. In the five-horse field for the Greatford Handicap, Rational was a hot favourite. From a moving up start all got off on terms, but Mark Time and Stratle soon drifted. Shut Eye led Rational and Iliapotoa to the turn, where Rational began to close on Shut Eye. He reached the leader a furlong from home, and won b v a length. Ihapotoa was four lengths away, followed at intervals by Startle and Mark Time. SANSON HURDLES.

Red Head was scratched for the Sanson Hack Hurdles, Dubious being an even-money favourite from Pinna, Pouri Hoiho, and Euchre. The early leaders were Bonomel and Lady Comet, but on the last round Haligan and Bonomel went out in front. Haligan had a lead of three or four lengths coming to the striaght, where Dubious drew up. He landed over the last hurdle a fraction later than Haligan and beat her home by a length. Pinna was six lengths awav third, with Pouri Hoiho fourth, and then came Bonomel, Ladv Comet, and Velociform. There were onlv 14 tickets on Haligan, who was paying over a century for first place. FRASER MEMORIAL. The scratchings for the Fraser Memorial Handicap were Startle, Mountain Bell and Fillette. In a good betting race, Martulla was a £26 better favourite than Alaric, Whetunui (on whom riders were changed) and Para being the next best supported. Happy Dayr took charge from Para and Martulla, with Whetunui last, well back. Running into the back stretch Ruby Ring went up fast to the front and led Happv Days, Para, and Alaric to the home turn. Approaching the straight Martulla joined the leaders, and running on won very easily by two lengths from Alaric, who beat Ruby Ring by three lengths Happy Days was close up fourth, with Whetunui and Para next in order, and Santonio a bad last. RANGITOTO HANDICAP. Anticipate and Sansalino were scratched for the Rangitoto Handicap. Archeen, with, a 51b. allowance, was a hot favourite. Beaumont and Birthmark were the best backed of the others. Beaumont was first out, but was soon displaced by Loyal Maid, and prominent in a bunched field were Archeen, Calm Eve, and Bonnie Gold. Loyal Maid led into the straight from Archeen, and won nicely by three parts of a length. Mountain Ore finished well and got third place a length further away, -with Kilburn fourth, and Beaumont and Birthmark.

NGAIO WELTER HANDICAP. Koauau was scratched for the Ngaio Welter Handicap. In spite of Brigadier Bill’s big weight, he was made a very firm favourite, Merry Queen being the best backed of the others. Red Head took Die lead when they had settled down from Charleston, Merry Queen and Brigadier Bill. Red Head led into the straight and was challenged by Merry Queen. A strenuous tussle saw Red Head win by half a head. Brigadier Bill was third two lengths awdy, with Ardfinnan fourth and then Bonny Rill and Beaumont.

PAREWA.NUI WELTER HANDICAP. Alaric and Fillette were scratched for the Pafewanui Welter Handicap. Brigadier Bill, who had just carried list. 91b. into third place over eight furlongs and a half in the previous race, also starting. Mountain Hell (H. Gray) was backed down to evens. Brigadier Bill and Omahu, who were bracketed, carrying most support amongst the others. Brigadier Bill began best, and led Mountain Bell and Treadwell, who joined him down the back, Ihapotoa being handy. Brigadier Bill was in front as they headed for home, where Treadwell retired. Mountain Bell had Brigadier Bill’s measure 'at the distance, and she looked a winner until 100 yards off the post, where Ihapotoa shot up and caught her in a few strides, going on to win comfortably by two lengths, with Brigadier Bill a length behind Mountain Bell. Happy Days was a good fourth, followed by Black Cruiser, j Esthonia and Treadwell. Ihapotoa had run a moderate third to Rational I earlier in the day, but het form was not such as to disclose such a comfortable win in this race. FAREWELL HANDICAP.

Bevis, Shut Eye, Archeen, and Master Lucerne were scratched for the final event. Backers regarded Papaponga as the best medium for a recovery, and installed Gray’s mount a £350 better favourite than the local candidate Euphonium. Lucrative, on the raijs, hopped out smartly, and piloted Euphonium, Gold Clip, and Miss O’Dille from the tapes. At the far turn Miss O’Dille had taken charge from Lucrative, Euphonium, Luarne, and Roburite. Luarne went through the leaders and led into the straight, followed by Miss O’Dille, Euphonium, Lucrative, Papaponga, and Gold Clip, with Miss Hupana about third to last. The lastnamed had began a forward move, and the field closed at the distance, where Gohl Clip sorted himself out and beat Euphonium to the judge by a length,

with Miss Hupana, coming very fast, beaten by the narrowest margin for second place. Papapouga and Empire Camp were next.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.’’) Nominations for all events at the Easter meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club will close to-night at 8 o’clock. The telegraph office at Featherston closes at 5 p.m. H. Gray will ride Hipo in the Thompson Handicap if he starts. If not Gray will ride Suggestion, who has been doing well on' his home tracks. Civility will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by R. Reed. 11. Wiggins will ride Good Sport, W. H. Jones Uralla, R. J. Mackie Reremoana, M. McDonald Claudhu, C. Butler Clarinda, W. S. Bagby Spoony, and B. H. Morris Quest. R. Reed's mounts on Thursday, besides Civility in the Thompson Handicap, will be Ilka, Merit, Mimetic, Piquant, Quiescent, and Curraghmore.

11. Grav will ride Siaosi in the St. Leger, also Rafa, Oration and Arrheen R. J. Mackie has been engaged fol Wilderness and Gold Box at Trentham this week. The Banker, who promises to start favourite in the St. Leger, is to be ridden by B. H. Morris. R. S. Bagby .will be on Agitato, and he will also ride Drolatique and Gold Acre in their races.

There deos not appear much prospect of a race for the North Island Challenge Stakes. Rational is not coming to the meeting. J. Brown _ states that his name should not be in the list, as a telegram was dispatched paying forfeit. Merit will probably start in the open sprint in preference to the Strikes, which leaves onlv Motley and Inferno to oppose Gloaming. Mr. Currie declined the contest with Motley last year, and he may not feel anv more inclined to take on Gloaming this time. Altogether it is a verv disappointing response for a £lOOO stake. One cannot altogether blame those left in if Gloaming frightens them out on race dnv, but when forfeits were due. Gloaming, for nil that was known to the contrarv, would not be a starter, and only a handful responded. The chib has discarded the Waterloo Stakes at the summer meeting for lack of encouragement, and the North Island Challenge Stakes is not receiving much better support. This vear the Stakes and the St. Lem-r comprise a verv poor classic double from the chib’s point of view. Although Red Wink has been allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Thompson Handicap, J. B. Pearson may bring him north for the Trentham Gold Cup. on the second day of the Wellington meeting.

The light-weight apprentice jockey, C. Eastwood, who is attached to Cntts Brothers’ stable, met with injuries while riding at Waimate on Thursday. He broke a blood vessel in one of his legs, necessitating his removal to the hospital. It will probably be ten davs or a fortnight before he is all right again. This is bad luck for his employers, as it will mean securing another light-weight horseman to do the riding on Sir George Clifford’s team at Trentham. It will also mean that another rider will have to be secured for Fool’s Paradise in the Thompson Handicap. “Tresham and his stable mate, Ilka, have been racing well lately, but so far thev have not beaten anything of good class” (says “Argus,” in the Christchurch “Star”), “It is hard to credit that they are up to the weights they have to carry in the company they will have to meet at Trentham. In the Thompson Handicap Tresham has Bst. 51b., while Ilka has Bst. 71b. in the Railway Handicap. Thev must have improved out of sight to liave a chance in either race.” They have.

Tito arrived to-day, and will be riding work for the meeting. The presence of these light-weights should be welcome to trainers. Spoony has a leg, as the result of getting knocked about on the railway trip. RICCARTON NOTES Saturday..
