TERAWHITI TOWS CORINNA. The Union Co.’s tug Terawhiti returned to Wellington at 8.10 last evening with the company's cargo steamer Corinna in tow, from New Plymouth, the latter vessel having suffered a broken tail-shaft recently. The Terawhiti used as a towline a 15-inch cable-laid Manila rope of special quality, attached to a 4}ln. steel flexible cable-laid wire of special manufacture, th» latter being fastened to the tug. These were attached to the Corinna’s chain cable, which iu turn was fastened to a big ISin. coir cable, the whole making an ideal combination for towing. The Corinna’s disabled propeller was lashed rigid with chains and wire, but it proved a tremendous drag. The Terawhiti, with her tow, left New Plymouth at 2 p.m. on Friday, but on approaching Cape Egmont received a wireless message from 11.M.5. Dunedin, located about ten miles off the cape, reporting a south-easterly- moderate gale and heavy sea. When five miles off Cape Egmont, Captain Willson, of the tug, in response to a radio to the Meteorological Office, was informed that the conditions reported by the cruiser prevailed in Cook Strait. At 1 a.m. on Saturday the Terawhiti encountered a south-easterly gale and heavy head sea, which was breaking right across Terawhiti. As the tug could make no headway and the tow-line was straining so heavily that it was in danger of parting, the Terawhiti turned baek and sheltered under Egmont. At 10 a.m. on Saturday conditions seemed to have improved, and the tow was resumed. 04 rounding Egmont a fresh south-easterly and heavy.sea was met with, but conditions steadily improved until 4 a.m., when the weather became calnj. At 11 a.m. a helpful northerly set in. On nearing port a heavy south-easterly swell set in. The Terawhiti and her tow made port without mishap of any kind.
