LYALL BAY PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

GENERAL MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Ljall Bay Progressive Association was held on Wednesday evening. Mr. A. C. Blake presided over a good attendance of members. Tire chairman reported on the results of a deputation to the Works Committee of the City Council, which he declared were highly satisfactory, and would, he felt sure, hear good fruit. The main question—the widening of Queen’s Drive between Coutts and Freyberg Streets, had received the careful attention of tho committee, and the deputation had received an assurance that the work would be regarded as an urgent matter. The Civic League had given its support to the proposal. Another matter of importance noted by members was the recently commenced low-level footpath from the corner of Queen’s Drive and Torn Street, northward, along the drive. This footpath has been left in a half-finished state by the council employees, and is regarded by residents as an eyesore and a danger to foot passengers. Residents in the vicinity, who are anxious to build niotor garages, are unable to do so until the footpath is completed, and proper access to their properties is available. It was decided to keep the mutter under the notice of the authorities. The City Council is to be asked to remove the shrubbery and triangle at tho junction of Queen’s Drive, Coutts Street, and Childers Terrace. It was mentioned that two serious motor accidents had taken place recently at this junction, and it was considered one of the most dangerous spots in Wellington. A suggestion will be mode to the council to replant the shrubbery c,t the intersection of Queen’s Drive and the drainage reserve. A letter was received from the City Council stating that the city engineer had been instructed to furnish the Libraries Committee with a report as to the most suitable site for a branch library in. the Kilbirnie district. In regard to a letter from the Wellington North Ratepayers Association suggesting the removal of tram rails and the substitution of trackless transport services it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. J. 11. Buigoyne-Thomas: “That, owing to the magnitude of the suggested undertaking, the Wellington North Association request the Civic League to convene a special public meeting of all associations in Wellington, and that ratepayers in general be requested to attend.” ‘ It was decided to support the Kilbirnie Municipal Electors’ Association iu> its resolution requesting the City Council and Harbour Board to confer at an early date, with a view to preserving bathing and reserve facilities &t the south and west of Evans Bay, in the interest of all citizens, young and old. The action was taken in view of the proposed reclamation at the head of Evans Bay. , . v Messis. 11. Linklater and E. A. R. Jones were appointed to represent the association at a conference oi municipal associations, to be convened by the Civic League. Messrs. J. M. Bertram, A. C. Blake, and F. J. Evans were appointed a treeplanting committee to collect information for the development and beautification of the district. \ The question of claims for land tax served on certain residents of Lyall Bay at the instance of* the Commissioner of Taxes, on account of arrears in taxation left by former owners of the land, was raised by Mr. Burgoyne-Thomas. Mr. R. L. Jones explained the position as due to an Act passed last session to enable the commissioner to recover from purchasers of property arrears of land tax left unpaid by tho vendors. It was pointed out that the claims legally w'ere understood to take precedence over mortgages. The assurance was given that the mutter was receiving attention. The following requests are to be made to the tramway deparment(l) Erection of a shelter shed lor passengers at the Lyall Bay terminus. (2) To run a -pecial car into the city, leaving the terminus at 8 a.m., to relieve the great congestion existing at present. _ (3) To prevent the unnecessary hold-up of certain cars at the loop, near Resolution Street. The Automobile Association is to t>e asked to take steps to prevent the excessive speeding of motors along Coutts Street, Onepu Road, and other thoroughfares.

Tho danger of tins lying about yards harbouring rats, breeding flies, and other vermin, was considered. The City Council rubbish collectors decline to 'take these tins away. It was decided to request the City Council to devise some scheme for the disposal of waste tins and similar waste materinl.
