POWER BOARDS
ALLEGED BREACH OF AWARD. The Arbitration Court (tA£r. Justfe# Frazer presiding) yesterday heard an action by Mr. N. V. Dyett, Mastertoll, inspector of awards, against the AVairarapa Electric Power Board, asking for ffJ5 penalty for an alleged breach or the award, in 'failing to pay the Wellington district rate of wages. The board was represented bv Air. W. A. Grenfell. Mr. Dyett claimed that the unapprenticed youths employed should have been paid journeymen’s wages. They were employed like apprentices, and were paid 30s. a week. Air. Grenfell’s contention was that th* lads were merely assistants and labourers. A number of genuine apprentices were employed, whose training was assisted. in. every way. Evidence was given that the lads concerned were assisting in wiring work. The Court decided that there had been a breach as the evidence disclosed that the boys had been engaged at work connected. with the trade, but that the under-rate workers’ clause might have been more generously interpreted. No injustice had been done as far as i could see. A. fine of £2 and costs kJ 15s. Bd., was imposed.
