MONEY IN CHANCERY
NEW ZEALANDERS’ GOOD FORTUNE A LEGACY OF £1,500,000 (BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL CORBESPONDENT.) Auckland, December 30. Further particulars concerning a fortune of £1,500,000 which was left to Air. James Whitley, of Timaru, and his sister, the late Mrs. E. Brown, of Christchurch, by an aunt in British Columbia, over a quarter- of a century ago, were given by Mrs. A. Scott, of Devonport, yesterday. Mrs Scott is one of Mr. Whitley s five children. Her husband has a partnership in a grocery business in Dominion Road. ‘‘The money has lain in chancery for 25 years," said Mrs. Scott. “Aly late aunt’s daughter meanwhile made every endeavour to trace my father and'his sister, Mrs. Brown, in order that they might have their share of the estate. The search lasted until quite recently. It has ended now and conclusive proof that they are the rightful heirs has been forthcoming. The money will reach New Zealand as soon as the necessary formalities have, been completed.” Mrs. Scott further stated that her father and hi« aunt left their home in Ireland about 50 years ago. The aunt, who always told her nephew (Mr. Whitley; that she “would not forget him in her will,” went to America and settled in British Columbia. She was then a wealthy woman and later she married an American millionaire. Mr. Whitley, who came to New Zealand, exchanged little or no correspondence with his aunt. He married and continued in his occupation as a shoemaker. He Is now over 70 years of age and has for the last 20 years resided at Timaru. Mrs. Whitley is still living. Both he and she were naturally pleased to learn of thengood fortune, but Mr. ’Whitley at present has no intention of changing his place of residence. He spends a great deal of his time gardening at his home at Timaru. “It is a pity'," concluded Mrs. Scott, “that my father was not able to enjoy his good fortune years ago.” Mr. Whitky’is sister, the late Mrs. Brown, is survived by' four married children, a son and three daughters. As the money' has been in chancery for such a long time it will have considerably' increased by this time.
