SEAMEN'S CLAIMS
REFUSED BY AUSTRALIAN SHIPOWNERS MORE VESSELS LIKELY TO BE HELD By Telegbaph.—Press Association. Copybight. Brisbane, December 20. A conference between representatives of the shipowners and the local branch of the Seamen’s Union discussed the points at issue in regard to the steadier Canberra. A union representative stated that unless the demands regarding deferred pay were met unconditionally the union would not supply a crew. The shipowners said they would not agree to pay the claims. The seamen asked to be allowed till this morning to consider the position, when they would give the owners a definite ••.iswer. . •. Some of the members of the crews of the Bombala and Cooma have also given notice of their intention to leave these vessels. In the meantime r the necessary steps have been taken to pay off the crews if the seamen’s answer is unfavourable. —Press Assn. WATERSIDERS REFUSE TO. < WORK UNION HEADQUARTERS DEFIED Perth, December 20. The waterside workers at Fremantle have broken the Melbourne agreement by refusing to work the steamer Clan Munroe. In this action they are defying the Melbourne headquarters of the union, but they are acting under the instructions of Tom Walsh, the president. —Press Assn. WAIKOUAITI HELD UP. AT LYTTELTON DISPUTE WITH STOKEHOLD CREW By Tblegbaph.—Press AssociationChristchurch, December 21. The Union Company’s ifitercolonial cargo steamer Waikouaiti, which was to have left Lvttelton on Saturday for Timaru to complete loading for Sydney, is held up owing to a dispute with the stokehold crew, which culminated in the crew’s refusal to take the vessel to sea. Indications are thab the trouble will be settled on Monday.
