UNITED STATES ARMY
PERSHING’S LAST REPORT
INCREASES OF PERSONNEL recommended (Rec. November 30, 11.30 p.m.) Washington, November 29. General Pershing to-day made his final renort as Chief of Staff and General Officer of the United States Armies. Ho recommends a greatly enlarged air force the lack of which is now the chief weakness of national defence; an increase of the regular army from 118,000 to 100,000 and of the National Guard from 176,000 to 200,000; also the strengthening of overseas garrisons and improved coast defence, with long-range railway artillery. Other recommendations include the appointment of six majorgenerals who served in France as permanent lieutenant-generals, also a larger ammunition reserve supply, and periodic exercises of national defence units similar to the .recent Defence Day, and more citizens’ training camps. He is opposed to the establishment of a separate air force similar to the British. Mr- Weeks, Secretary for War delivered his annual report, embodying practically all General Pershings’ recommendations. — Aus.-N.SJ. Cable Assn. , • .
