CONTRACTS FOR BRIDGE AND UNDERGROUND WAR MEMORIAL CARILLON Br Telegraph.—Press AssociationCoftright. New York, November 27. Mr. J. J. C. Bradfield, chief engineer for metropolitan railway construction in New South Wales, and his secretary, Miss Butler, have arrived, en route to Australia. They are sailing by the Makura on December 17. Mr. Bradfield has finalised the contracts in London for the Sydney bridge and the Underground railway work, an'd has examined the bids for the Sydney University’s war memorial carillon. It is understood that the latter contract will now be given to one of two firms, and the price will be considerably under £20,000. The carillon, which will be among the most unusual in the world, will consist of bells weighing 60 tons, the largest of which aggregates a ton of metal. Miss Butler has examined several of the most inworta»T)t American bridges, including that al Hellgate, over which she walked, inspecting the structure, which,. after the Sydneybridge is erected, will bo the second largest in tho world. Mr. Bradfield, commenting on the Sydney underground, expressed the belief that the first section would open probably in June, 1920, and the method of construction would tend to follow the London underground rather than that of the New fork subway. All the material required will probably be made in Australia, although some of themmor parts wi’l be contracted for in N®iv York and London. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
