AMERICAN TOURISTS FOR AUCKLAND

PARTY OF 450 COMING NEXT YEAR (By telegraph—Special correspondent.) Auckland, November 28. The Cunard Liner Carinthia, a vessel of 20,000 tons, and the latest addition to the fleet of that company, is to visit Auckland in. December, 1925, bringing 450 American tourists, who are “setting out on a special Pacific cruise. Details of the negotiations . which have led to the decision to include Auckland as a port of call were given by the Mayor (Sir James Gunson) to the City Council last night. The Mayor stated that arrangements for this cruise in a specially chartered vessel came under his notice in September, 1923, ■ and he . then communicated with the organisers (the Raymond. Whitcomb, lours Ltd., of Boston) in an endeavour to obtain a call of this vessel at Auckland, but was advised that this was not practicable. Early this month he received a cablegram again opening ur> the question, and he replied by cable issuing an invitation to visit Auckland, and intimating that, the visitors would be accorded a civic reception. Advice has now been received that the Carinthia would reach Auckland on December 22, 1925, leaving again at midnight on December 23. “I view this as a. very important matter,” added the Mayor, “and one calculated to do a very great deal to make New Zealand much better known abroad, seeing that the visitors will very largely comprise leading business and professional men of the United States. It affords a unique opportunity which, as in other, directions, we have not been slow to seize to bring ourselves in contact with the largo centres of the world.” The report was received and the Mayor was thanked for the action he had taken in the interests of the city.
