ANOTHER CAMPAIGN THIS SEASON (BY TELEGRAPH— SPBCIAJj CORRESPONDENT.) Masterton, August 13. The very unstable condition* of the beef-growing industry was discussed at* a meeting of over 100 farmers hero todaMr W. Perry, vice-chairman of the Meat Board, traced the operations of the board over the last two years in an effort to place the meat industry on a better footing. Tho “eat more beef” campaign had resulted in abattoir killings in beef . increasing by 18,000 carcasses, and in* calves by 11,000 and sheep and lambs decreasing bv 37,000 carcasses. He road an extract from a letter received from Mr. David Jones, chairman of the board, now in London, which stated that beef was in heavy supply, and a new record had been established at Smithfield by Argentine chilled beef selling at one penny per pound on the open market. His board would institute an “eat more beef campaign again this season in an endeavour to dispose of the surplus. The board would also investigate iho possibility of opening up a market in Java. Mr. L. T. Daniell, director of the Wairarapa Frozen Meat Company, moved: “That the Meat Board bit asked to estimate the amount of beet to be eaten, annually in New Zealand to cope with tho glut in beef; furthei, to issue monthly reports m various districts showing the percentage of meat eaten and tho amount necessary to be eaten for economic handling of the country’s resources.” He said that this would put into operation machinery u**ed bv the Imperial Food Control Board during the war on a compulsory basis, but tins would bo on a voluntary basis. .
