Mr H C. Foster, assistant manager for the D.1.C., who is taking up a position at Lewis’s, Invercargill, was farewelled at a social gathering on Thursday evening. On behalf of the staff he was presented with a tea service. and he was the recipient of a smoker’s outfit from tho D.T.C. Cricket Club Mr W. Sitnm. manager, and Mr ’P* H Halstead, managing director expressed their appreciation of Mr. Foster’s services, and from the directors he received a substantial cheque. Mr. A. E. McDonald, farm manager of the Tokanui Mental Hospital died suddenly early yesterday morning lieports tho Press Association). He was about as usual instructing the men for the day’s work, when, without warning. hd collapsed .and expired before aid could bo summoned. Ho had been farm manager since IJJJ, and was recognised as a very capable official and highly esteemed. Ho was aged 40. Ho leaves a widow and a~ family of five. A vorv old and highly-respected resident of Wellington, Mr Charles Kreeft, passed away yesterday morning The deceased, whoso death was not altogether unexpected, as ho had boon ailing for some time, was tor upwards of 40 years employed ns «. clerk in the Treasury Department, formerl.y in the property tax branch and latterly in tho lan<l and income tax section. The late Mr. Kreeft in his youth was a prominent all-round athlete. and from IFBO until 1888 was a momlx'r of tli© first fifteen of tn© Wellington Football Club and a mem tier of Um first eleven of the A\ ellir.gton Cricket Club. Thougn handicapped by a lame leg, Mr. Kreeft was a first-class footballer and cricketer, and in tho eleven was one of the best Irundlcrs the club possessed in those days. Ho nlaved for. Wellington against tho West Coast in fbo representative Rugby match in 18//, and was a member of Iho Wellington team vzbieli won the senior chemnionsbin at cricket .under Dr. Collins’ leadership, in the BO’s. Ho retired upon superannuation about five years ago. A man of kindiv heart and wide sympathies. he was revered bv all who knew him. His wife predeceased him a few months ago.
