OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE
JEWELLER FINED £2O. George Arthur Jenness, who w.as found guilty of obstructing the iwlice in regard to information he possessed about"’ a diamond pendant he had purchased, was fined £2O by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday morning. Mr. E. F. Hadfield, on behalf or accused, emphasised the fact that the jury had acquitted Jenness on the charge of theft, and said that the form of obstruction of the police was a venial one. Jenness had underestimated his duty to the police and had undoubtedly taken a more serious viaw of his obligation to the girl than the circumstances warranted. His Honour did not disagree with the lenient view of the case taken by the jury, and said he would take into consideration the fact that Jenness was wcqnitted of the major charge. It was a case neither for probation nor for gaol, but, as some penalty must bo imposed, he lined Jenness £2O.
