The event of the evening was the fine win scored at 9.30 p.m. by Mr. A. W. Gvles. who has been runner-up for the New Zealand championship six times. Mr. Gyles, with fine iudgment, first sacrificed a knight for two pawns in order to secure positional advantage, and he was subseouontly able to bring off a fine win. sacrificing rook for pawn to secure a mate in four moves. A round of annlau'o greeted New Zealand’s first win. Late in the evening Edwin A. Hicks, another prominent aspirant for championship honours, managed to secure a draw, although he was tho exchange down (Knight v. Bishop).’ Mr. Kost’ch won the remaining 27 games, his onlv piece of luck being in a game finely played by H. Jessup, who spoilt his chance of . scoring by not noticing that his king was in check.
