BOWLS
MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE
INTERESTING RULES DISCUSSED
Mr. F. Meadoweroft presided at the Wellington Bowling Centre last evening. Notices of motion by Mr. W. E. Spencer mentioned at the last meeting of the centre, were considered. Tho first motion was that in delivering a howl the player must have one foot wholly within the boundaries of the mat. The mover said that he only wished to make the existing law emphatic, and he meant that n man could be penalised if he had a toes or heel over the edge of the mat. Not one howler in five hundred, he said, conformed with the meaning of the law as it existed. Mr. J. Muir seconded tho motion.
Mr. J. Keith thought it was better (o have the rule providing for one foot "or a part thereof” on the mat at the. moment of the delivery of tho bowl, as most bowlers rose on their toes, and probably swung a little one way or the other as the bowl was delivered. Ho thought that the word "wholly” should be eliminated.
Air. A. Coles said he was not in favour of altering the rules. The game was a friendly one, and he did not think they should hedge it in with too many rules. On being put, the motion was lost. Air. Spencer then moved: “A bowl that does not traverse 20 feet of the space between the mat and the jack shall be dead,” or alternately, “A bowl which, in its original course, comes to rest less than 20 feet from the mat shall be dead.” Ho said that he only wished to remove an obscurity in the rules. Mr. J. Kershaw seconded the motion. The motion was carried. Mr. Spencer further moved: “If a toucher in the ditch be displaced by a toucher it shall remain where it comes to rest; if displaced by a dead bowl it shall be replaced.” This was also approved. The motions passed will be sent on as remits to the Dominion Council. The date for the receipt of nominations for positions of president, vicepresident. non. treasurer, and six nonofficial members to represent the North Island was postponed from last night until July 1. By that time the clubs will have held their annual meetings and returned their delegates to the centre. Air. Kershaw said that tests made at tho beginning of the year had revealed that certain centre standard howls were found not to be up to the Dominion Association’s standard howl.. That being the case what was the position of those bowls which had been measured up to faulty standard bowls? The point was discussed at some length, but it was thought to be too difficult to trace all such bowls,, q»nd the conclusion come to was to have suspected bowls challenged. It was decided that the secretary’s honorarium be the same as last year. The annual report of the centre for the past year was submitted and approved. It mentioned that the number of affiliated clubs had remained at 19. the membership of which was 1472, as against 1494 last season. The expenses of the season had not been heavy, and tbe centre was able to provide for veterans’ gala day out of ordinary revenue. The year commenced with a small credit balance, and after meeting all expenses, the amount now standing to credit was <£sl 2s. 7d.
