WORKS APPROVED £260,000 GREAT BITUMEN HIGHWAY FROM WAIKANAE BIG AUCKLAND PAVING JOB H-ariJ.-u. .-x-jJaeICL.. Main road projsota, totalling £260,000, have been approved bv the Main Highways Board, including a great bitumen highway from Waikanae to Tokomaru. Works totalling £50,000 are still under consideration.
The Main Highways Board, which met in Wellington at the week-end, approved of a general scheme of reading works for various parts of the North Island.
Au anomaly in motor taxation is revealed by the projects. Auckland motorists are to get eight miles of concrete road, costing £(53,078, of which sum half will be found by the local bodies and half by tiro Highways Beard: Wellington has just' completed miles of bitumen road at a cost of £40,000, which sum is being raised wholly by a special tax on Wellington motorists, the High ways Board contributing nothing and the local bodies nothing. No special tax is to be paid by the Auckland motorists for the 'eight miles of concrete road bordering on their city.
Taking the projects in the order of their size, a great bitumen highway is planned from Waikanae to Tokomaru, costing £148,000, of which the board and the local authorities will pay half each. The length will be 46 miles, and the width 18 feot. The work will bo spread over three years, and the board’s expenditure for the current financial year will bo £24,668.
Next in order of value is a 61-mile concrete paving job from Oakley 'Creek to Henderson Town Board out boundary in Auckland, the local authorities participating being the Avondale Borough, Waiteinata Country. New Lynn, Glen Eden, and Henderson Town Boards. The width will be 18 feet, and the expenditure £60,000, of which the board will find half, the contract being spread over two years, £15,000 to bo spent this year. The reconstruction and metalling of the Maungatapere-Kaikohe road, in tUa Bay of Islands, a distance of 17 miles, and of width varying from 14 to 20 feet, is estimated to cost £16,800, of which the board will find £14,000. The work will take three years, and £4667 will be spent this yead\ by the board. Calcrete paving at Ono Treo Hill will cost £13,078, of which the board will find half and the Road Board half. Tho distance is 132 chains, width 18 feet, period of work two years, £3269 to bo spent this year. Other' works are as follow:— Bay of Islands.—Waimamaku-Ohae-awai. reconstruction and metalling, 480 chains, 20 feet to 14 feet, £5OOO, board’s contribution £2500; two years; £1250 to be spent this year. Kaildohc-Omapcrc.r—-Formation, 160 chains, 20 feet, £2OOO (all found by board), one yoai Whangaroa-iOkaihau, Kaeo to county boundary.—Widening, 560 chains, 18 feet. £5OOO (all from hoard), one year. Whangaroa to Waiaro Junction.— Maintenance, 800 chains, 12 feet, £4OO (£134 from board). Dargaville - Maungaturoto - Wairoa Bridge.—Maintenance, 500 chains, 12 feet, £612 (£204 from board). Dargaville to County Boundary.— Maintenance. 1680 chains, 12 feet, £lB7O (£623 from board). Wellington. — Wellington - Napier Road, in Woodville County, #>ir and bitumen, 434 chains, £1343 (£671 from board). Same road and county, tar and bitumen, 440 chains, 15 feet, £5068, £2534, four years Dudley-Durham Mountain Road, Inglewood County,—Bitumen, 108 chains, 18 feet, £3493, half each, one year. Coast Road, Opua-Arawhata.—Bit-umen, 100 chains .(no amount stated). Boylan Road. Eltham County.—Asphalt and resealing, 200 chains, £430, £143.
Eltham Road, Eltham County.—Asphalt and resealing, 290 chains, £615 (board’s share £205). Coast Road. Waimate West County. —Asphalt and resealing, 640 chains, £1520, £507. Main South Road, Patea County.— Reconstruction and maintenance, £lO,400, (half each), one year. Wellington-Napier Road, at Konini Bridge, Pahiatua County.—Concrete (no amount stated). Same road, same county, at Warren’s Bridge, £3900 (half each). Masterton-Tainui Road.—Formation at Rororoko deviation, £1375, £687. It should be noted that, where the amount to- be expended this year is stated, it means the amount of the board’s quota to be expended. The pleasing feature of the pronouncement is that the WellingtonPalmerston North road will be half completed within three years.
