OTAKI RACES LADY BEN WINS HUIA HANDICAP OPEN SPRINT TO MIREUSONTA The winter meeting of the OtakiMaori Racing Club was concluded yesterday in fine weather. The track was soft and the going slow. Big fields were again the order, and the racing much more interesting than oh the first day, some of the finishes being very exciting.. Lady Ben won the chief handicap from end to end, and the sprint race went to Mireusonta, who also led all the way. Wassail enhanced his reputation by again winning, making his third race for the meeting and the fourth on end, in as many starts. The judgment oi backers was much nearer the marl; than on the first day. The club is to be commended lor making a radical improvement in punctuality. Totalisator-closing and racestarting times were strictly observed, and the last raec was over within a few minutes of the advertised time. The starting also was a great improvement on the first day. The totalisator turnover for the day was £14,920, making £35.397 for the meeting, us compared With £37.785 10s last winter, a decrease of £2338 10s. PUKEHOU HURDLES.
The dozen acceptors lined up for the hurdles. ’ The first dav’s running and a change of jockeys induced the public to believe that Nukumai was a really good prospect, and he was installed a hot favourite. Kinsem and Merry Bells were the only other two inquired for. Mangawhero and Labour Morn were prominent in the early stages, tho field being well bunched. Entering the lust round Nuktimni and Kinsem were in the lead from Merry Bells, Pantier and Admiral ’ Codrington. There Was no change down the back. On the turn Nukumai was going easily in tbe lead. Kinsem had dropped back, while Solfanello and Admiral Codrington had come up on terms with Merry Bells. Nukumai held his advantage oyer the last hurdle from Solfanello,' and camo on to win bv two lengths, Solfanello being a similar distance in front of Admiral Codrington, who beat Merry Bells by’ a head. At intervals camo Labour Morn- Mangawhero. and Kinsem. W. Bowden was cheered on riding his first winner since reappearing in the saddle.
TAINUI HACK HANDICAP. Pillage and Lucrative were taken out of the Tainui Hack Handicap, leaving 14 runners. Backers would not hear of the-defeat of Wassail, and he was sent out a hot favourite, with money also for Loved One. on whom Gray had the mount at half a stone overweight. As on tho first day, Wassail was soon out, and going easily ali the way had Imperial Spark and Lady Merriweo attending him for half a mile. . Loved One in the meantime had been unable to go the pace and dropped right back., When the Stt.light was reached Wassail had beaten those closest' to him, and he came on to win by u couple of lengths from Imperial Spark, whose challenge was unavailing. Carnbee finished batter than tho rnst of the beaten lot, and was another two lengths off, with Tjnohari close up, and then Kuhio at tho head of u bunch. Tinohnri did not get too good a run in the early part, but nothing Would have beaten the winner. Loved Ono finished last. \ HUIA HANDICAP. Merry Day appeared on the card, but Was not- an acceptor in the litiia Handicap, and Hipo was scratched on the course, leaving the large field of 19 runners for the chief handicap. Arch Salute was »the favourite, but was only, slightly better fancied than Lady Ben. There* was a nig drop to tho next in order. Correspondent and Megan, Tho public judgment was substantially correct. The "field gave a lot of trouble at the post, and when they were lot go Lady Ben was on the move, receiving an advantage of two or throe I lengths. She led, out of the straight from (Rose of Athens, Irapuka, and Arch Salute, and down the back Arch Salute lan up io she leader, Itos,, ol Athens third, and then Irapuka and Aeriform, with the field fairly well strung put, Megan, who had a bad passage on tho turn,' being well back. Thorp was no change to the homo turn, where all tho leaders were going Well, except Prifitemps showing up behind them. ’When the straight Was reached Arch Salute put ih a challenge, but Lady Hen held her place and won comfortably by two lengths from Arch Salute, who beat the fasb-finishiilg Cohrespohdlent by a length. Irapuka was beaten into fourth place, with Rose of Athdns next, and then came a big bunch in which lladiap and Merry Queen Were prominent. Lady Ben had. all the luck Of the race, but she is in good order at present, and bad run a good race in the Cup the first day. Aeriform failed to run on.
RANGIURU HACK HANDICAP. AH thirteen acceptors paraded for tho hack mile race. Potoanui was made a very warm favourite,' almost throe times as well backed as Kalakaua. The favourite was never dangerous. Sensible took the lead, with Otaufu and Bonny Marion’ next, Kula- 1 kau being Well back by the time they had reached the back stretch. Miss Mickey, who haff covered a lot of ground on the turn, became prominent as' thc% ran for tho homo betid, hut a little further on Kalakauna began to close up. Continuiliir. lus run he had reached the lenders at the top of the straight, and in a good finish with Sensible ho beat her by threbquarters of :» length. Bonrina came through tn the concluding stages, and was a length away in third place. Potoahui was a couplo of lengths further off -n fourth plnce, followed by Atapo, Bonny Marion and Aliss Alickey. Tho change of horsemanship did a lot for the winner, who needs riding. ' RAHUI HANDICAP.
All started in the open sprint event, and with Grey in the saddle Hipo was always favourite, from Ecuador, with
Mireusonta a good third choice. -Mireusonta aul Ecuador got out well and led from Koodoo, Avonlea, and Hipo down tho back and approaching tho turn. Half a mile from homo Mireusonta and Ecuador were just in iront of Koodoo, and they were leaving Avonlea and Hipo, who looked already beaten. The three leaders entered the straight with Mireusonta o’i the rails, and although Ecuador challenged strongly, ho was beaten by half a length. Koodoo finished on well and was only a neck behind Ecuador. Hipo was four lengths off, with Avonlea and Birkie next. OHAU WELTER HANDICAP. Fourteen hacks went to the post for the Ohau Welter Handicap, thero being no scratchings. Bright Eyes was made a firm favourite. She was well back in the early stages, but finished fast and just failed to get up. The early leaders were Alabama, PanIm, Carnbee, and Master Black, but they were well bunched on the turn, whore Dominant Went after the leaders, followed by Carnbee. The two leading jockevs had a desperate race up tho straight, .McCarten getting Carnbee home by the shortest of heads. Bright Eves was a half-length off, followed by Alabama and Peter Roga. Alabama ran on better than the other pacemakers. WAIKANAE HACK SCURRY. All started in the concluding eVent of the meeting. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.’.’) Acceptances for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting closo today at 5 n.m. s Nominations for the winter meeting of the Nanier Park Racing Club will close on Friday at 8 p.m. ’llio Auckland and Dunedin meetings will be continued to-day. Tho first race at Auckland will be run at 11.15 and at Dunedin at 10.57 a.m. Parorangi broke down badly yesterday while contesting the hack hurdle race at Obaki.
Wassail’.’ the best hack at Otaki, and incidentally the best seen - out for some eoiisiderble time, won his race yesterday in only l-ssec. slower time than Mireusonta. Moreover, he won easily, while Aliretisonta was doing his best. It is said that Wassail was bought for less than £4O, and he has been broken in only about five months.
C. and A. Recd were very successful in the flat races at Ellerslie on Tuesday, winning three out of tho four. ,
The most successful horseman at Otaki was R. J. Alackie, who rode Wassail in each of his three successes. Al. McCarten and J. Barry each rode two winners, and R. Hunt, T. Tito, W. Tippetts, H. K. Alexander, W. Bowden, A. Brown, and H. Gray one each.
The Great Northern Stieeplccha.se will be run at Ellerslie to-day. Alter Sea Do’il’s good showing in tho hurdles ho will come into favour, and ho should be capabJj or a good race. Omahu should run well. The Opaki people are confident that Sir Roseberv will prove one of tho hardest to beat.
Alaric was one of the well-backed candidates for the Cornwall Handicap, but it was generally admitted that the distance- would be too far for him. To-day he is engaged in tho —’ng George Handicap, run over seven furlongs, and he is expected to shape well.
At the Tattersail’s meeting at Randwick on Al ay 24, Poach Brandy was a starter in the chief handicap. Ho ran well for about six and a half furlonas. He was ridden bv Claude Stephens, formerly at Trentham with H. A. Telford. Carawock ran -well into fourth nlaco in a field of fourteen runners in the hurdle race. 'They ran the two miles in 3min. 41sec., so they were travelling. Peach Brandy was to have started last Saturday at Moorefield, but Air. Boyle, after a look at tho course and the hurdles, which are small, decided to keep him for stceplechasinc. and reserve him for Bandwick. AA’ormald has been schooling him since arrival, and he is workinc: well.

When the stand was reached again Lochson Was showing the way to First Born, Black Art, Tinokaha, and Peter Amans, with Booinerday, Hyghias Sea De’il, Oakleigh, Alary Bruce, and Explorer next.
