WINTER RACING

ELLERSLIE, OTAKI AND DUNELIN MEETINGS SEA DE’IL’S GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES RAUKAWA CUP WON BY MEGAN

Winter racing was in full swing yesterday when the Auckland, Otaki and Dunedin meetings wefe commenced. The going generally was on the heavy side, and some surprises were registered. The Great Northern Hurdles, the first leg of the big jumping double, was won by Sea De’il. The success, while unexpected, did not come out of its turn, as Sea De’il ran third twice in succession, in the years 1921 and 1922. In the latter year he won the Great Northeim Steeplechase. Illumination won the Cornwall Handicap, being a well-fancied runner. Taranaki supplied the runner-up in each of these big races with Lochson and Income. At Otaki Megan won the Raukawa Cup and Orchid captured the chief sprint race. Palestrina, after a series of disappointing performances, Avon the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin and Pamplona proved too good for his opponents in the Otago Steeplechase, which he won last year.

OTAKI MEETING MEGAN WINS RAUKAWA CUP SPRINT TO ORCHID

The winter meeting of the Otaki-M.-iori Racing Club was ’ commenced yesterday in fine weather. The track was holding as the result of the recent rains, but dried considerably during the day, a'qd did not cut up to any extent. Large-, fields were the order,"" and in the majority of events the public found it hard to pick the winners. While the racing wa., interesting and finishes in most cases were not close enough to cause much excitgpicnt, the best being in the big race, the Raukawa Cup, which was won by Megan after a good contest with Arch Salute. In the Taipua Handicap, Orchid scored an easy, victory. Tlie hack races were marked Irv the double winning performance; of IVassail. He won both his races with ridiculous ease, and looks good for hotter things in the future. ' Including the two races won by Wassail, four event,, out of the seven went-to Hastings trained horses, the other two successful being Merry Bells and Megan.

Ono detail in connection with tlie day’s racing which calls for criticism was the unpunctuality observed in the starting times. Otaki has a bad reputation in this respect, and yesterday Arrangements lagged throughout -■ the afternoon to such an extent that the last race, set down to be run at 3.57 n.ni.. was actually started at 4.33 n.m. With so many of the club’s patrons attending via the railway services such tardiness results in great inconvenience to all concerned. It is also a breach of the rules of racing which state that the last race of a winter meeting must not he started la+< xr than 4.15 p.m. 'Die' totrilisator turnover for .the seven races was £20,477. /as against £16.132 for- the first day last year, which was not a holidav After ' the hurdle race Nukmnai's connections were asked a question, which was answered satisfactorily. TARART'A HACK HURDLES. Bonecto was the only scratching In the opening event, and backers went solidly for Nukumai and Kinsem. who carried fifty ner cent, of the money with very little between them. Tim field strung out very soon after the start, Panehito and Kinsem being in the lead with Labour Morn and Pan-t-b>r the most prominent of the others, while Nukumai was a long wav in the year. Kinsem took the lead on the last round. Panehito tiring, and down the back she was joined by Merry Pells. Thev were several lengths clear of Labour Morn and Pantier, .who were together. Admiral Codrington being the nearest , of the remnindc<l. Turning for homo Merry Belb had headed Kinsem. while Admiral Codrington had passed Labour Morn and Pantier. Nukumai beginning to come up. At the last fence Merrv Bells had a. slight advantage from Kinsem, nmd in the run home beat her hv two lengths. Nukumai finished better than Admiral Codrington. and finished in third place, ten lengths a-wav, four lengths in front of Admiral Codring ton, who was followed at intervals bv Labour Morn. Mangawhero, Kareno. and Pantlcr The first- two horses are beginners nt hurdling. They iumned well and ran good races, but Nukumai was kept too far hack •in the carlv stages or he would Lava troubled them. Admiral Codrington was neglected in the betting. He lumped w°ll. and outside the pinned horses looked the most likelv to 1n» nrwe on the showing. Pantier and Labour Morn were fair. Kareao was expected to he prominent, but never threatened, and the others appeared outclassed.

TtUKTJ MAIDEN RACE. They were a poor lot generally in the Kuku maiden Hat race, for which Sealed Orders, Ta.inakana, Elmorz, and Our Jack were withdrawn, and backers went for Ansene Lupin, Ilan, gimonna, and Kuhio. Kuhio and Arsene J-iupin ran in the lead alt the way, and the former lasted better than the favourite, beating him by threequarters of a length. 'l’ikiraa was live lengths back m third place, and the next to finish were Luarne, Master Black and Panache, all well beaten. Rangimoana was never sighted.

WAITOHU HACK HANDICAP. The scratchings of Orchid, Loved One, Carnbee, Peter Rosa, and De bate, still left a big field of sixteen in the hack sprint. Tinohari, who han boon responsible for a good gallop on the morning of the race, was made favourite, but did not have many more tickets than Wassail. Between

them thev practically monopolised the betting. The start was a poor one, Loyal ~Maid getting a break of two lengths, and the rest went off in straggling order, "Wassail and. Tinohari being the most prominent. "Wassail overtook Loyal Maid on the turn and came on to win in hollow fashion by five lengths.. Tinohari beat the tiring Loyal Maid for second place bp a length. Bonlita was next, followed bv Imperial Spark, and Road Hog. The winner is a fine big gelding, and would have scored just as easily had the field got away in line. RAUKAWA CUP. The last minute withdrawals from the Cup were Scotch-’ Mixture, and Helen Rufus, a field of 18 going to Um post. Despite, the fact that Tame Fox appeared a 'bit sore in his preliminary, he was in most demand with backers, but it was a very good betting race, the first half dozen in order being separated by not much more than 100 tickets. The public appeared at a loss in sorting out the winner, and in the race itself the best fancied lot were decisively beaten. There was a long delay at the start, and when they were dispatched Megan began best and led through the straight, with Arch Salute. Irapuka. and Trespass handy. Lady Ben at the head of the remainder, who were . alreao.v well strung •out. Turning into the back stretch Megan and Arch Salute had opened up a gap of three or four lengths on the others. Irapuka had dropped out by the time the five furlong post was reached. Trespass and Ladv Beu being together some distance behind the two leaders, who were going so well that they had all the others struggling. Tame Fox showed up at this stage, but was well back, and Correspondent was also too far out On the home turn Arch Salute was' almost on terms with Megan, and Ladv Beu had reduced the gap. Nothing else had a chance, all being too far , away, although Correspondent could be seen making a run. In the straight the two leaders showed no signs of faltering, and in a punishing finish -Megan beat Arch Salute bv a neck. I.adv Pen got to within half a length of Arch Salute, and she was ten lengths in front of. Correspondent, who was followed by Bitters, Theic and Radiac. It was a regular boil over. Ladv Ben finished well. She ran.third in the same, race last year. Theic got the worst of the dispatch, losing some < f round. "• OTAKI HACK HANDICAP. Merrv Bells was the only scratching for the Otaki Hack Handicap, and in a field of 13 Atapo, with the services of M. McCarten, was a good favourite. He ran a fair race, but never looked like winning. Otauru, Potoanui, Otapo, Sir Pam, and Asleep were prominent in the first stages, but at the end of a couple of furlongs Merry Queen had run to the front, and she led from Otauru and Potoauui for the rest of the journey. On the home turn Otauru and Potoanui closed on the leader, but in the straight she went away again and won comfortably by a couple of lengths from Potoanui. who heat Otauru by a length. Sir Pam was fourth, where he had been practically all the jouiney, and the remainder were bunched, Sensible, Atapo, Asleep, and Miss Mickey being the most prominent.

TAIPUA HANDICAP. Vaccination was the only withdrawal from the Taipua Handicap, and another large field, comprising 18 runners, went to the post. Ecuador was made a hot favourtie, but he s’ot off badly in a moderately successful start, and although he was putting in some great work at the finish he found the handicap too great, and had to bo content with third place. He performed well to get so close as he .did. Rose of Athens and Aeriform were also badly placed soon after the start, and they failed to show up. Mireusonta and Orchid were the first out, frdm Civilform, Koodoo, and Solfanello, and the field was soon strung out. Orchid had headed Mireusonta rounding the turn, where the latter was well clear of Koodoo and Solfanello. Civilform having dropped back. Ecuador made a great run round the bend, and at tho top of the straight Orchid was four lengths in front of Mireusonta, others showing up being Ecuador, Koodoo, and Solfanello. Orchid came on to win by three lengths without being extended, Mireusonta beating Ecuador by two lengths. Kootloo was three lengths further off, closely followed by Avonlea, All Marimba, Solfanello, anil Aeriform. Koodoo ran a fair race, but was not up to the company. Al though Orchid may not have been beaten had all got away well, Ecuador, All Marimba, and Aeriform were a bit unlucky.

TE HORO WELTER HANDICAP. Potoanui, Moonstruck, arid Dominant were scratched for the concluding event, in which AVassail, Miss A/ickcy and Master Black were making u second ap|>earancc. AVassail was penalised 101 b. for his earlier win, but it only placed him 31b. more above the minimum, and as he won with ease it

was not surprising to see him made an even-money favourite. He won even more easily than ho did on the first occasion. Ho indulged Alabama with the lead till the turn, where he ran to the front and won in a canter by four lengths from Bright Eyes, who came into the picture over the last two furlongs and beat Master Black by five leng'hs. 1O these was fourth, ami then came Miss Mickey, and Alabama. The start was not a good one, Kilfaire, Miss Mickey, and Bravato losing several lengths.
