UNITED SERVICES CLUB

A meeting was called last week to consider the proposal to form a united services club in Wellington, and was attended by some seventy officers from General Headquarters, ths Wellington Garrison, Reserve of Officers (Regular Army and N.Z.). Royal Navy Reserve, and Royal Air Force Reserve. MajorGeneral C. W. Melvill, General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, occupied tho chair. General Melvill stated that the meeting was called to confirm the action of the committee in securing a lease of premises in Panama Street, and as general officer commanding, ho hoped that a really active c.ub bo formed He considered a club essential in Wellington as it provided the only means of officers meeting each other under conditions where they could discuss and keep in touch with service mat. tors. In addition, it was. a valuable means of improving the military education of officers. The dub must fu.lil two conditions. It must be a social .club, and at tho same time it must provide facilities for military education. Clubs in Auckland. Christchurch, and Dunedin wore very successful, and ho hoped this club would prove equally so. It. was very necessary that the club be a strong onej and every officer should do his best to bring the advantages of the club before officers of hi® acquaintance. Membership was limited to commissioned officers of the Naval. Milbory and Air Forces of the Umpire, whether on the active, reserve or retired list. Tho meeting confirmed tho action of the committee in securing a lease of the premises ill Panama Street, and it was decided that the cluiv should bo called “The United Services Club.” Tho undermentioned officers were e.ectcd :—Pres’dent, Lieut.-Colonel R. St. J. Beero D. 5.0.; committee, Licut.-Colonel 11. E. Averv. C.M.G.. D. 5.0.. Lieut.-Col-onel R. B. Smythe, D. 5.0., Major D. J. Gibbs, D. 5.0., Major G. Lvon M.C., Captain M. R. Aldridge. Lieutenant Stcllin Captain C. E. Blayney, Captain h. Renkin. Lieutenant W. 11. -Tones; bon. secretary, Major E. Puttick, D. 5.0.; bon. assistant-secretary. Captain Peterson; bon. treasurer. Captain K. T. Jonsson. The committee was instructed to draw up a constitution and rules for consideration bv a later genera’ meeting with a view to tho club being incorporate! and registered under the Incorporated Societies Act, 1908. It is hoped to have the eJub rooms available for occupation by June 9.
